You need to test drive a 458 and 488 in race mode to understand why an older car would be better than a newer car.

IMHO the 488 is the better choice for 80-90% of owners. The specialness of the 458 will only truly shine under specific driving/ownership circumstances. Outside of that, most may end up wondering why they chose to spend 488 money on the older 458.

Disclaimer: I own/love my 458.

 

You would cheating yourself to test drive a 458 in wet or sport mode. Race mode is when she is the real 458 and completely differentiate herself from a 488. I had my good 488 buddy in my 458, when I switched her to race mode, my 488 buddy, for the first time saw why the 458 is greater than a 488. He immediately started talking about selling his 488 for a 458 spider.

A mondial has a mid engine n/a V8, I should start considering them also I guess.

 

I drove both 458's and 488's back when I was shopping. The 488 was better in many respects. I liked the feel of more power...the torque push back in the seat over the 458. I liked the 488 interior better and over all more muscular looks too and the feel of the 488 while driving. The 458 sounds better but all the other aspects of the 488 outshined the 458 for me.

 

If 488 is better than 458 why the price on both are so close ? Why the 488 is depreciate so much more than 458??? Even 488 is newer and better

 

458 is the last n/a V8 so potential buyers are looking at long term depreciation whereas the 488 can't say it has any special tag on it even though it is a better vehicle overall....
