Excessive backlash causes a clunk, not gear whine.
When does it make the noise? Is it louder on power or coast. Does it change depending on gear selected?
Same all the time? Changes with speed?

The noises in a transmission can be caused by gears or bearings. By carefully analyzing what effects that noise and how you can go a long way in deducing what part is causing it by knowing what part is most or least heavily loaded during different operating modes.

360 transmissions are not terribly robust and noises are common. Between poor quality oils, not being changed as often as they should be and failures of heat exchangers have all taken a toll.

    Brian,

    1. I do have a clunk when backing up then stopping to change direction
    2. The noise (now more whistling than whining) happens on the power stroke than coasting
    3. Does not change with gear shift, more speed related

Any update on this? I have a slight whine on declines on light or no throttle, wondering if you have made any headway.

No update yet. Life got in the way and I need to do a timing belt job on it any way so measuring the backlash will have to wait until then.

I’ve had exactly the same symptoms / problems with my car.
My local specialist diagnosed it as having had the wrong grade oil in the gearbox at some point in its past. Keeping in mind the car has less than 20 thousand miles on it and has been regularly serviced. The upshot of this was a complete gearbox rebuild inc new bearings, and some new synchro’s.Luckily no damage to the crown wheel and pinion.
    Not a cheap fix unfortunately!

When you say "not a cheap fix", how much was that?

Didnt see this till now. From your description it isnt "A" gear. The pictures from what can be seen the ring and pinion look good. If speed related and load related may be a pinion bearing. Good news is if its a bearing going bad it will get worse but not likely damage anything else. I hate to rip things apart on witch hunts.I'd drive it, see if it gets worse and monitor the magnet for metal debris. But I cannot judge how bad noise is. If the carrier is still out Id scrutinize the pinion bearing as well as possible. See if pinion can move up and down or front to rear. If noise is bad enough in your judgement or if pinion can move at all, take it apart. If you choose to run it longer and it gets worse and metal is sticking to magnet or clunking gets worse, take it apart. Too much backlash can be either ring and pinion wear or pinion bearing wear.

Brian, so after finding that the right side CV boot shield was rubbing against the CV joint to the point of destroying the heat shield, I fixed that and the noise when down by 75% to a low humming sound (my best description). I might still do a paint mark check anyway but that will need to wait a few weeks.

The total price was almost 9 thousand pounds!
It was money well spent as the car now drives as it should , shifts gear much more smoothly and no more noise.
