Great pic, fun car! Love the 550 in the foreground. You are 100% spot on. One of our cars did 180mph into turn 1 at cal speedway. If it wasn’t built right, someone would die. But we could have a whole thread about race cars. All of this is a distraction from the high mileage aspect. It’s just that after about a year of holding my breath I just cannot anymore with Clyde. He sings the same “my 575 is better than your 550” song everywhere he can. And the chorus goes “I don’t care what they say, I’ll take my f1 anyday” and “all 550’s overheat, so get a 575 that’s so neat”. =)

    it’s just too much!

we should all enjoy the cars we have and the differences between them. We all have an opinion as to what we like, but to go on every 550 auction on bat and try to scare away buyers and harm the seller by singing this fake news song, it’s just not cool. Not cool at all. And he brought me into this thread. Which is wild as the last bat comment I made on this topic got like 15 thumbs in 30 minutes and he got flagged and deleted. You would think he could reflect. I am not sure how many hot climate 550 owners have to come here and say that their car doesn’t overheat. Lol. Oh well.

There are some guys…I find this almost hard to believe….but some guys say that a C5 is nearly as economical to run as a Miata due to reasonableness of C5 parts cost for consumables and availability for the parts on corvettes is SO robust?

That sort of judgemental statement usually says a lot about the lack of confidence and relative inferiority complex of their authors.

The answer is always miata but I have been too stupid to realize it but coming from a 348 racecar I'm a genius. The c5 is not that economical as parts get rare. My 1st c5 Racer we got Bullitt proof gm crate motors $3500. Now we can't find used cores to rebuild for under 4500 so easy 10k stock rebuild! Racing is 6 mpg so it hurts the wallet. Hoosier tires are 2000/set before tax and mounting. Everything cheaper with miata and bigger fields of cars with closer competition. Lots of choices up and down from gen1 spec miata, gen 3 mx5cup, and I don't even know what they are doing with miata ND but those have sadev sequential gearboxes in race trim. I'm pretty sure I'll be in a miata before my race days are done. Anyone want to buy a very fast race ready corvette?

One life in a race car vs many lives on a an airplane, right !
    You lack perspective son
And your love of the 550 is noted, it’s just doesn’t cure the issue !
Stay on the ground and use your particular skill set to wow those who know less than you do
Race cars are cute, airplanes are another story.
Ferrari made the 575 for a reason, you just don’t know why but others do!

I agree with you if you say something negative about a vehicle you put yourself in a position where they can throw you off.
they have their favorites especially when it comes to Ferrari's.
even when you post links to issues with the vehicle, they frown upon it.
the FF and the Luso come to mind with the problems on the DCT and PTU.

I'm responsible for 108,000 of those mile, traveling to 46 states, several E to W and W to E cross country trips, multiple trips to the SW and Cali and therefore rendered the car worthless on the re-sale market. Well worth the depreciation, not to mention upkeep, including 5/6(?) majors with belts.

Missed Ak, HI and for some reason WA and Vt. Looking at a map., I drove to San Diego and then up the Pacific coast to OR and for some reason cut across to Portland and headed East on I-84 and missed WA. Vt is also a miss for some reason, having driven around MA, NH, Maine, go figure.

It would be a dream to do a "cannonball run" but as i've gotten older I realize....for me at least....that window has probably closed as it feels like thats a "younger mans game" to do a 2-person coast to coast.

I am watching the Gumball through SE Asia and even my wife is starting to understand the allure of the open road! She is enthralled by the content.

I think we have decided to retire to Europe and by then we will be in our 60's and she is up for some long distance road tours I think (she never was before).

However, I did GoldRush with my best mate and there is something special about a week in a car at high speed with a "brother" - memories that will never be truly understood by someone not on the journey!

9 days, 7 racetracks and 5,400 miles on the 2006 Cannoball Run One Lap of America and while I agree generally I can tell you my Miata for 2 dudes was snug and smelly! ;-)

Team “Anything But Last” and true to form we finished 2nd to last out of all finishers! (This was when the car was also still naturally aspirated).

My 550 has almost 90 k km. After a "teenager period" around 70 k km with some issues to solve due to age, & not active and unhealthy life, she's now a good companion for fun. Will need some work bushes and ball joins though ;)

    Awesome, Eric!

I did the One Lap three times back in the late '90s with a Navy squadron buddy and his brother in his white supercharged '91 Mustang 5.0 LX. What a blast! We traded off driving duties at the various tracks and on the road. Three of us in that 'stang was also a tad snug! One of the more memorable moments: 3 One Lap cars (including us) in convoy getting nabbed at 3am in western Oklahoma for doing 130 in a 55 zone. My buddy's brother was driving at the time, he was riding shotgun and I was in the back seat trying to get some sleep. I thought for sure we were all going to jail but the county mountie let us off with a just a fine, albeit an expensive one!

3x is legit "Lap Dog" status!

I always wanted to do it again in something bigger with a backseat so we could have 3 guys. The intent was to do it with the black Laguna "Project Talladega" but my deal with my wife was to cull some of the toys that were under used when the Maranello came into my life. Never say never but if I can do the OLOA again I'd really like to do it in "Vintage American".

    I love stories like that.

I was driving an M4 in the GoldRush in a group with an R8 V10 Plus and 2x Gt3 RS. A cop did a u turn and we knew he was coming for us. I was in the back, so I radioed the others and said I would take it and once he got behind me, I pulled off the hihgway on an off-ramp. I figured as we were the first group through, I would get him off the shoulder and down so he could not see the other cars go buy.

Well... he proceeded to let me go and pull the other three over on the shoulder. lol

I was on the radio with the passenger of the lead Gt3 Rs and the cop said "is that your BMW buddy on the radio?" when my friend said "yes" - the cop said "let him know it was a good try, but here in Montana, 2 Porsches beats 1 BMW everyday of the week!"

He had a pretty good sense of humor and as we were not going too fast, he let them go.

On the other hand, the reason we joined 11-99 was a fun story too. We were on the way back to OC from Historics weekend. On the 101 south in a pack of 4 Porsches (this was 2000 and we had just taken delivery of our 996). Dad was driving and the lead car was the owner of Budget Beverly Hills (which was the first rental agency to rent super cars and the like). He had 11-99 and the other three of us did not. We were MOVING! We were not too worried until we heard a helicopter and then 3 minutes later the 101 south was blocked by two CHP. They said they had been chasing us for 45 minutes! lol After MUCH chit chat and he saw we were all adults and not dicks, he wrote everyone for 85 in the 70 and said "tell the rest to get 11-99 ASAP and then we would have let you all go!"

We joined 11-99 the next day!

For those that do not know 11-99 in California is a foundation that supports the families of officers who are killed or hurt in the line of duty. For as long as needed. It is a great foundation and the highway patrol shows a lot of "patience" with members who are not too pushy about being members.
