The chassis is not unique for all Diablos, Lamborghini recycled the last 5 digits quite a lot.
The actual chassis would include the year code, i.e. "VLA12724" (note there is a 1998 SV with same number, it is WLA12724 and there is 2001 6.0, it is 1LA12724)

And, this car is technically a 1997.5 because it has airbags, early 1997 model car cars did not have airbags.

 

That is correct. And I thought that they got the 18" wheels and larger brakes with little bump in hp the second half of 1997 but it looks like this car has the 17" wheels and those upgrades didn't happen till 1998.
