The hooked tip on the tie rod of my drivers door check strap has long since broken off, leaving my door free to swing open and closed as it pleases. I’m ashamed to say it took me many years to even realize it was broken, as I always just thought “20 year old Italian Supercar…” Shame on me. But I digress. I ordered a new/used check strap assembly, and was planning on removing the speaker from the door and R&Ring through the speaker hole, like I just did on my Porsche, but before I go removing door panels and speakers and getting all greasy, I’m wondering out loud if I should be able to just remove the intact tie rod from the replacement assembly, position it into the original assembly in the door through the slot, and pin it back to the body. If so, it would save me a lot of time and effort. I’m only asking this out loud because I just got to work for the next 18 hours and don’t have the assembly in front of me, or I would just be trying it myself instead of posting the question.
When I was tugging on it and inspecting it earlier, everything seemed pretty tightly secured together. Thats why I’m wondering if it’s as easy as pulling them apart and putting it back into the original assemble without taking it out of the door.
Can anybody say for sure? Or if not, if my plan of removing through the speaker hole will work without further disassembly of the door?
For reference, here is the picture of what I found when I was investigating the check strap. Hooked end completely broken off, and the remainder of the tie rod able to be easily and completely removed.

Answered all my own questions this morning. I was able to remove the tie rod from the new/used strap easily enough, and thought I would be able to pop it into the existing mechanism through the opening in the door without removing it. Much to my surprise, it just flopped around in there like nothing was even attached. Turns out, it’s because it wasn’t. I removed the aluminum door trim and the speaker, and was able to reach up and access the broken hinge without removing anything else. The mechanism was completely sheared in half, and the hooked end of the tie rod was completely snapped off and missing. At some point in this cars life, that check strap had a REALLY bad day at the office.
Replacement strap went in without a hitch, and I finally have a door that hold itself open after 3 years! Who woulda thought? o_O

I've got a new 360 door check tie rod assembly--the whole thing, end to end--in hand. Both sides--4-hole slotted bracket that mounts on car body, and the tie rod/tension bar assembly/mount plate that secures to the door. I bought it from a spare parts dealer in Canada.

My question is--can I insert the door side of the complete assembly through the exterior door vertical edge, once I remove the old assembly? Or do I need to reach in from the speaker opening (requiring removal of aluminum trim plate/speaker-no big deal) to insert from the door interior and then run it through to the car body?

The tension rod portion may bee too large to insert through the exterior door hole---

I'll find out myself tomorrow anyway when I remove the old assembly and have a close look! Curious to remove it and get a look at what the actual issue is--I don't think the original tie-rod snapped--the door will not swing all the way out--but it sure clicks annoyingly loud whenever I close the door. Curiously I had the same issue with my 77 308!

I believe you’ll have to remove the aluminum trim and speaker either way. I forget the order of operations, but there’s no way to disconnect and reconnect both ends without removing that.

Update--job done. The door side of the check tie rod assembly bracket must be inserted inside the door--easily achievable by inserting through the speaker opening, as mentioned before. Previous owner must have swung the door wide open with great force, as the end of the original tie rod had snapped off.

All is well--life is good with properly-operating 360 doors!
