Hey folks I'm just working my way into the motor to replace the cam seals. (1982 2V GTSi), have a couple of questions if you kind people could advise. I have a bit of a leak coming from the front corner. Originally thought it was the cam cover gaskets so replaced those but its still leaking and closer inspection shows its coming from the front cam seal on the front bank. I'll replace all 4 whilst I am in there. Questions; Can I replace them with the cams in place? Or am I into pulling the valve covers and lifting the cams? Can anyone confirm whether the bolts holding the gears to the end of the cams are normal or left hand thread? Anything else I need to know? Thanks in advance
If you replace the seal, this way, I don't recommend that you buy the unbranded ones that the Ferrari spare part reseller's offer (in the UK). Get a branded, quality one from a specialist supplier. Otherwise you will have a hell of a job keeping the tension spring correctly on the lip. And with the cam cover on you'll not be able to tell if the spring has become dislodged or not. As a bonus, it will also be less expensive!
Ok, I’ve bought the seals from Superformance. Guessing that’s not who you mean? Will add a little adhesive to keep them in place.
Lip seals are not something I would buy again from them. I bought some a few years ago. They may have changed their supplier since then, hopefully.
The camshaft seals are 50mm id, 65mm od and 8mm wide, a standard industrial size available wherever oil seals are sold.
