I'm getting way too many requests for a subwoofer for this car not to take action. I was able to spend a good 3-4 hours in an F12 this afternoon. These rough cardboard templates are good enough for me to create a prototype enclosure. I hope to have some wood pieces delivered before the end of the week. I really don't know the story about this car. It has been sitting for a long time at the back of this repair shop (whose name I won't mention out of courtesy). I'm just grateful that I have unrestricted access to it.
I'm sure you've seen the battery charging port in that corner. Likely you are keeping the height low enough to avoid access but wonder why you don't just target the other side.
I went to the shop this morning for some test fittings. All looks good so far. I did take a good look at the passenger side of the trunk area. The issue with placing a subwoofer enclosure on the passenger side is that it will sit on top of the carpeted panel that you need to lift up to get to the spare tire/pump/etc. The subwoofer itself (as it slightly protrudes out of the enclosure on the drivers side) will just clear that carpeted panel so it can be opened. I just got off the phone with my CNC wood cutting guy. He is in the middle of another project so he won't be able to cut my pieces until Friday at the earliest. It will probably be next week before my next progress report.
Okay, I spent the better part of a day meticulously trimming each of the wood pieces until each one fit nicely into the recessed area, then ensured that all of the pieces fit correctly as one unit. A couple of hours on Auto CAD and I was able to come up with 12 .dxf files, one for each piece. The back side of the car (and hence the enclosure) slopes inward as you go further back into the recessed area, so this is why each successive piece is a bit wider than the piece behind it. I could have just taken the easy way out and made a smaller, rectangular box with identical pieces, but chose the more correct way in an effort to maximize airspace for the subwoofer. This enclosure will have approximately as much airspace as my 458 Spider enclosures, and they sound fantastic. Once my wood cutting guy sends me the 12 pieces, I will fit them all together and test fit the prototype enclosure. I'll share any final modifications that need to be made as well as mounting strategies. The battery charging port access will also be addressed at that time. I messed up today. I got a late start, and by the time I had completed a 430 Spider dual subwoofer system, I found out that the shop with the F12 was closing up early because of New Year's Eve so I wasn't able to test fit the enclosure today. Thursday (the day after tomorrow) is the new target date. The long bolts and nuts are temporary, to hold the pieces together during development. The prototype enclosure fits perfectly. That being said, I'm a bit stuck at the moment. I can make a hole in the side of the enclosure using a hole saw to be able to access the charge port, but unless you want to remove the actual speaker every time you want to access the port, I'll need to come up with another solution. Ideally, I would be able to source a one foot long "extension" of the charging cable that I can plug into the car through the hole in the box, and mount the other end level with the front surface of the speaker box, near the upper left-hand corner (where you wouldn't notice it unless you bent way over and looked for it). But I've never seen the cable that is used to charge this car. I have no idea what it looks like, where to get one, if it's Ferrari F12 specific (or even if it's Ferrari specific), if it has some sort of "catch" that you have to physically release to unplug it, etc. Any information or ideas along these lines would be extremely helpful. Okay, I found this short video which was really helpful: https://www.ferrarisouthbay.com/articles/how-to-connect-a-ferrari-battery-charger Now I just need to figure out where to get one of these cables.
Perhaps something like this would work? https://www.ebay.com/itm/155388742524?_skw=Ferrari+4+pin+port+charging+cable&itmmeta=01JGM7K27VETC23RNJZDMV8MFW&hash=item242de40b7c:g:YgoAAOSwZOhjtCnz&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAABAHoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKmqDajwEEVq6Ja8Ay1Z7RcavH3gNfz70C6wZVbeJEeSiO2M0OnQBCfbQ7Qi4ktnmEw17%2BQ6NNK%2FSre73Iewx1luGvWYiGXWxfICooRd9T6FXGq0YVEyFAnkNfLbAEUwmFFnXCMRlG3OxlAkcn703AlUP5x3JeKxzbpqn9avS9C2fJrHD%2FliyhD8y1C9ywk%2Fo06MXhv4SyPvZz9qEMMabWlMhBg%2Fj54Ffo8Ys%2FFjrjCx7892%2BRwvB3WVdcHGfPCTXtw3%2BeZkRflBMRRfCt36J%2BcjlhyR2Xz%2F9bnI%2FVE2NDBmLb1xLYgprqN6tpJdxxbjaf4%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBMhKTMh4Vl
Hey Mike, that connector will get you to a CTEK I got mine from here as I have an SAE connected battery charger https://www.ebay.com/itm/195133571632?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=h04eLzDITyS&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=py1FD5ShStm&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY Owner was real helpful.Just tell him which connections you gotta make and he'll get you set up with the cable
This is fantastic information!! This is exactly what I needed to complete this design. The connector cable will go through the access hole in the side of the enclosure, then loop right back out of the same hole and terminate - wherever the owner wants it to terminate (i.e. upper left hand corner of the front of the enclosure, lower left, upper right, etc.). Thanks @colorfull!
My pleasure @SoftwareDrone ! It's the least I can do for you Mike, you spent literally hours on the phone with me walking me through my 'unique' installed stereo setup on our very first call before I even talked to you about any business. I am indebted and gratified I could help YOU for a change!
I now have everything I need to start cranking out production systems. The connector in the picture is a very short factory unit for display purposes, there will be a four-foot cable that comes with the enclosure so you can place it in any location. PM me regarding preordering information (i.e. hefty discount). The last picture in this set shows that there is adequate clearance for the utility door to open.
