What can people tell me about Arizona State University or Temple? Mia is looking, she likes they have the rare Sustainable Business Management, warm weather, and a good distance running program. Mia is not a 4.0 GPA 1500 SAT kid, so not looking for the most competitive schools. However, she does have a good GPA and SAT, wants a reasonably good academic school. Thank you.
hmm, neither Arizona schools on these top 25 lists. https://www.newsweek.com/top-party-schools-america-1619664 https://www.niche.com/colleges/search/top-party-schools/
ASU is a great school and you get out of it what you want. My son and I made 10-12 trips there and he was convinced he was going there until a last minute admission from another school made him change his mind. There is a great honors college there with separate housing/cafeteria that wasn't that difficult to get into but also gives a more scholarly atmosphere. It's definitely still a big party school but have had friends and friends' kids get as involved in it as they want to be. I was always super impressed with the faculty and school itself, even sat through an orientation and some classes. Part of me wishes my son did attend, but he did great in his college career. Good luck!
I graduated at ASU in 1978. Its a bit different now! My first semester costed me $179.00. I did a trimester some years because I was working and could only do about 12 credits a semester. Summer semesters were limited and shorter so it was about 1/2 price. But I could catch up a bit from those taking 16-17 credits. When I graduated 5 years later, I paid $235.00 a semester (which I thought was outrageous). So I graduated for about -- $2700 in tuition invested over 5 years. I came out of college richer than when I went in. Bought my first car in the 2nd year (well technically my 2nd but the first one I chose) -- a used MGB GT. It gave me so much trouble I bought a used Alfa Spider in my last year. It wasn't much better! Honestly, it was a pretty vibrant school then. Lots of students from CA. It was known as a "party campus". I never saw any of that. Not sure about today. Today there is a huge campus in North Phoenix instead of going to Tempe.
That's awesome! That $2700 didn't cover my son's fraternity dues for last semester, different times, and not for the better.
my daughter goes to ASU undergrad and now as a grad student. they are proud that the school ranks #1 in innovation. engineering school is in Mesa not Tempe. its kinda isolated from main campus. ASU did not require the covid vax and didnt go all in on remote schooling. out of state tuition with housing is about $25-30k per yr and she gets some scholarship money but she never tries to get more scholarships or grants cuz she knows we will foot the bill. she doesnt party at all. she loves ASU and AZ but it does get very hot. not the best running environment unless you start at 5:30am.
It’s not a party school anymore. Has a very good reputation. My daughter graduated from the honors college there and I’m currently doing an executive MBA program from there.
She's having a hard time getting a response from the coach although she would have been their #3 or 4 runner last year. Kind of frustrating there is such a high turnover with coaches if you catch a school in a year with a coach going out and the new coach isn't in place, then you can't lock down a roster spot. She has been offered roster spots from other schools and will probably go there although she might prefer somewhere like Arizona State.
how would you compare Arizona State with University of Arizona living there? From our perspective the academics and cross country teams are similar.
If you are asking me, I'm not the right person for the question. I'll be happy to help with any other Q's you may have. If you plan to come out for a few days, I have an extra car you can use. There are a few of us here in the valley who I'm certain will be happy to pitch in and be there for your daughter if she needs help with anything (if she makes the move).
It looks like ASU has seriously changed. When I came to AZ in the 80's (after I was done with school), I moved to Tempe. The apartment I had was near ASU and was full of college kids. The parties were non stop a was the eye candy. ASU used to have frat row. Those parties were legendary. Frat row is gone. ASU owns most of the off campus apartments as well as a lot of Tempe and tuition is out of control... as is the homeless and crime around the school. When I came to AZ, I think ASU had 30-40K students. It's probably doubled+. I think smaller is better, but that's just me.
Good news Mia was just offered a really nice academic scholarship by Arizona State that gets the costs inline with in-state. It isn't even like she's a 4.0/1500. I think they just like out of state applicants. We're making some more attempts to get in touch with the coach, we cc'd his boss. Haven't heard from University of Arizona yet. If your daughter was coming half way across the country to Tempe and you wanted a place for 4-5 years, but not too close, where would you go? I love the mountains, hiking, fishing, etc. Prescott?
Scottsdale area. otherwise you will be driving a lot. Scottsdale has everything you would want close by.
The nice thing about ASU is you are 15 minutes from the Phoenix airport so travel is a breeze. If you wanted to get a place near Tempe, but in the mountains, I would look at Payson and Prescott. Neither have amazing fishing but there are some decent spots within a short drive.
She accepted offer from the University of North Texas coach. Although I kind of wanted her to go out of state, North Texas is probably the best for her. The coach and team will definitely be the best for her. Maybe she can do Arizona for Grad and we'll probably go to Flagstaff for training trips. Hopefully I didn't get the Arizona State coach in trouble. I remembered my college teammate was a professor at Arizona State, I reached out to her for help and she got me in touch with her friend who was high up in athletic department for funding. He reached out to the coach and all his bosses then the coach emailed Mia immediately he didn't have any roster spots available. It was all really weird how he wouldn't respond and the team sucked last year, Mia would have been #3-4 on their team even with her high school times. Something fishy going on, but I think for the better.
