Family heirloom or did you just pick it up? It strikes me as a British market piece.

BTW, it has 15 jewels - you can see today's Rolex in that movement, nothing fancy but everything you need to do the job properly.

    Regards,

    Art S.

I had a feeling - great piece! It just has that British home market sensibility - even the American watches sold into the British market had that sensibility - basic but high fired dial, simple but sterling case, plain solid gold hands, simple but durable movement - no flash but no compromise. I'm guessing it's about equivalent in size to American 16 size. I'm curious how early it is, the Rolex name was first used in 1908; if it predates the inscription by a few years it might be quite early - if you are curious, the case's hallmarks will date it.

Now the big question: will you wear it or will it be a desk ornament? I would argue for wearing it, it's a decent, durable watch - and it's not what most people think 0f when you say you are wearing your Rolex... :^)

    Regards,

    Art S.

Thanks. Was worn with a tuxedo on Saturday night :). It has a great feel, heft and presence. Its a recent purchase, it was more of a saw it kneejerk gut buy, so still getting to know and learning about it.

    Awesome!

I know it's weird having it in the pocket and not on the wrist, but it's a different sort of cool. Did you pick up a matching half Albert chain for it while you were in Bath?

Patek (think of the Polish heritage!) minute repeater in the pocket next... :^)

Then something that keeps time - an American railroad grade pocket watch!

    The rabbit hole is deep...

    Cheers,

    Art S.

It came with the chain and as far as I know its the original. I've actually been getting into vintage watches but these pocket watches are another matter altogether...:)

Regarding the chain original is a bit relative. I don't think Rolex produced chains like they do wristwatch bands. That said, it looks appropriate. The hallmarks will give you a hint. If the chain's marks and the case's marks are within a few years, there's a good chance they were bought together.

Let me know if you start carrying the pocket watch. I'm curious if it will grow on you or get annoying. I'm also curious if you'll get a different response from it than you get from the wristwatches.

Oh, one thing, when wearing an open faced pocket watch (like yours) remember to have the face towards you when in your pocket.

    Regards,

    Art S.

Back on my wrist after a full refresh! I purchased this watch, used, ten years ago and finally parted ways for six weeks so it could be serviced. I was a bit hesitant of losing many of the original parts but after seeing and putting it on my wrist it feels better than it ever has. New dial, bezel, crystal, hands and escape valve.
