I own an 81 4.5 liter 928. The 4.5 liter cars were, I believe, the only ones you could get without any spoilers or stuff hanging off the car. Yes, there was a "competition" package for the early cars which added an air dam and rear spoiler, so it's not conclusive.

I believe the 4.7 cars, in the US at least, were all badged "928S."

If you look on BringA Trailer, you can see lots of examples of both.

    Hi Don,

Thanks. What about the engines themselves?

No idea. Maybe look at some of them on BaT and see if you can tell. There is probably a tag somewhere.

Do you not have the car, just the motor?

I'm on the verge of buying a 1984 928S (German version) with a replacement engine and wondered if it is the correct type of engine. I read somewhere that the air intake pipes are larger on a 4.7 engine (vs 4.5 version). But looking at pictures I can't really tell.
Here are pictures of the replacement engine.

I would probably look for an identifying serial number or something like that. I think that is going to be your best bet. Otherwise the differences look pretty subtle, if at all.

Have you tried the 928 owner's club forum?

According to another source replacement engines have their own type of serial number, different from original ones.
Anyway, I've asked the Porsche workshop who is going to do a PPI coming week if they can tell if it's the correct engine. Thank for mentioning the 928 owner's club. I didn't know it existed. I will check it out.

So I bought the 1984 928S and I'm going to give it a little TLC this winter. One of the things to tackle are the hood struts. They need to be replaced. My ex 1983 911 had the same issue. I vaguely recall replacing them with aftermarket ones that were stronger. Is there a similar solution for the 928?
