Why would someone ask if the window update was done. Why not just look at the windows. They’ve obviously been done

At least the seller is forward about it not being easy to reg in CA. Seems odd to consign here and not in Oregon. If the owner never drives it I guess it’s worth the risk of out of state reg
1998 550 55k miles out of Tucson Argento over Nero with basically no options Tubi’s Fresh tires and some solid recent maintenance. No excuses seems like a nice driver. someone debate me why paint meter readings would even kinda matter on this car. @bill59 I just realized maybe you commented because you have historical perspective that the car has been painted (and then that’s helpful) if someone thought a nice looking 55k mile car hadn’t had paint work. Again, no snarky tone, etc. any car with more than 20k miles is not likely to bring investor grade money unless it was somehow very special. this car should be loved for what it is. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1998-ferrari-550-maranello-19/?utm_source=Iterable&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=campaign_2648441#comments-anchor
Carrying on from your comment on bat…. I actually think the PAINT readings on Ferrari of this era are completely worthless. After visiting the factory many times during this era it’s clear that the paint on one car compared to the next to the next to the next could be radically different. These were truly hand built. On a car with some mileage. I kind of agree with you that I wouldn’t care or even really look at them. I think as a seller it’s nice to offer them because it shows that you’re not hiding anything. But as a buyer, they’re kind of pointless to me just my take. I do not agree that cars are 20,000 miles cannot bring big money. There’s actually more than one bring a trailer with significant miles that have sold for top dollar I think market, the number of bidders in a room and the spec of the car have a significant amount to do with the total bid. combine that with maintenance history and confidence in prior owners.
@Ferrari55whoa Okay, I'll debate ya. Paint meter readings being indicative of whether a car has its original paint or was possibly re-painted (even if only partially) at some point, an original paint car is always going to be more highly valued, regardless of age or mileage. Sure, there may be some exceptions, but for the most part that's just the way it is.
Any 50k mile Ferrari will need paint work if it hasn’t had it. And cars of era can appear to have thicker paint, making people think it’s repainted. When it’s not. I have seen cars come directly from the factory with a repainted fender.
Right, Brad. The Ferrari Factory would respray cars having had any paint damage after testing at Fiorano. Cars coming into the United States would be inspected at the port of arrival and sent to Ferrari-authorized coachwork facilities for any repairs before being sent to dealerships. Barry
So the point is Ferrari didn’t do fine paintwork in this era? That’s no surprise to anyone. But I take the comment on BaT to be that a 50k mile Ferrari isn’t worth much, so why consider paint. Anyone with a 50k mile 550 is welcome to sell it to me for $1 to go with my $1italian villa.
^ Right, Bill. Factory robotic painting wasn't the best during that era. As a result, all 550s have a blend line on the B-pillars.
@bill59 I didn’t say it wasn’t worth much (I pushed the bidding along with my comment to $55k) I said no one should care as it’s not investment grade at 55k miles. If you have done the 1-euro Italian house situation, I’ve watched several videos about that and find it fascinating. @NE550 Dave also played the correct side of the debate and I won’t push him…in that ….for a low mile car, I’d want the paint meter. Maybe someday miles over 50k won’t matter for a Maranello but it matters now WAY more than if the car has been painted…..and fwiw my guy says his painter is so good the variation from a meter will be immaterial when they do the work….. Buy it, drive it, enjoy it…..that’s a good car and it will make someone happy for sure. and fwiw my 2-cents is it’s at least $130k car….to Brads point with the right 2 guys in the room who knows how high it could go… Dollar for dollar….id take a high mile car over an imported (not for CA car) for sure….
Why would would you suggest that retouched paint is not "fine paintwork"? Many manufacturers do this all the time - Aston Martin notably being one of them. And Aston has a reputation for beautiful paint right out of the factory. I can personally attest to it. The goal is to produce a finish that is essentially without visible flaws and pleasing to the eye. No one cares how thick it is at that point...
@JohnnyRay you are correct in that 7 cars (2 are dailies) is too much. checked on my 550 yesterday and talked again to my mechanic about the FF he had and is thankfully sold (I keep thinking/dreaming)….mentioned it to my wife last night and the girls squealed….daddy if you buy one more we get a cat! The reason for the 550 bid is to keep pushing it up and if I comment or ask a question it’s only fair to keep some action going on the auction. We all know the real bids happen in the last 2 minutes but strong interest throughout helps push “immediacy” for the guys that will actually “play” at the finish line. to that mentality…. I feel like my bid and comment on the current 575 brought out the “real guys” a little early… we have covered car storage in different threads….i have genuinely been thinking about does a guy buy a storage condo down in Phoenix/chandler for some of the seasonal toys? My 2 race cars my ‘69 Bronco, my big custom-coach-SUV and motorcycles could all be stored down there and might get used more….just having a hard time mentally dealing with having stuff that isn’t “physically adjacent”.
Eric how long has the 550 been down for ? What is the hold up !? I finally got my 456M back last month. Headed up to San Joser for Christmas. albeit via airplane. I saw this bad Oscar last weekend casually parked outside the Firehouse bar in Venice Beach. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Chandler - no. North PHX - yes. cuz you have a friend that can help check on them when you are not around! lol
Regarding my 550 being at the mechanic since May 2nd…. most of it was simple…. annual fluids Gave mechanic a new siren from Gobble Gave mechanic headlamp gaskets from Ricambi Mentioned something weird was going on with the drivers door mechanism guy is well liked and swamped….left the door until I hassled him. ordered a part….didn’t work…. tried the mechanisms from a 599 and.a 612 and claims they are different. the part allegedly has plastic gears that decay and the mechanism “unit” is NLA. He sent it out to have it rebuilt and whoever and where ever it went isn’t in any kind of hurry. it sucks but I’ve said it before that I am still in this “window” where our girls are so sweet and active and I have zero personal time and the 2nd half of the month it’s not uncommon for me to work at least part days 15 days in a row so the time to “adult play” is pretty slim. I don’t mind deferring “Ferrari time” or race car time or motorcycle time etc while they are still so young and fun….yesterday as an example we got invited by another family to go make Xmas presents at a pottery place in Santa Cruz….girls loved it….then had cub scouts….then pass out…repeat…. And as they get older all my 20 year old wants is car time WITH dad! Over thanksgiving when he was home we did at least 1-2 car events a day! It was great!
This spring I’d like a few more days like this one…. that’s my vintage Baja Manx racer Image Unavailable, Please Login
There are guys in LA & South of LA that can sort that door out. Just FYI. AAA has been a loss leader for a guy like me on this stuff. Towing between the “specialty”shops in LA over the years to get this kinda stuff’s resolved.
The SF Bay Area went to hell in a hand basket once @Rifledriver left for Texas (zero sarcasm). lots of exotics and limited shops. Patience is a virtue. #ArtisPain?
Hi folks. This is my car. I take it back and forth to Bend, Oregon and the market there is very small relative to the Bay Area. I always bring it to CA for maintenance as well. Never had an issue with the plates but I imagine a new buyer will likely ship out of state or pursue another reg method besides CA BAR.
