In the shop: 1983 Ferrari 512 BBi - twin-turbo back to stock

We've had a special car show up at the shop this week.
This 1983 Ferrari 512 BBi was fitted with a forced induction twin-turbo system over 20 years ago!
Its new owner has brought the car to us for restoration back to its original naturally-aspirated glory—just the way it rolled off the line in Maranello.

sad to see how this great work will get redone to original. will cost a lot of time and money - and of course torque and hp
you know perhaps if at that time when the turbo came on also the gearbox has been modified? if so I would keep the gearbox as it is.
what about the brakes, suspension?

 

I would restore it as well. It is not a Koenig, just a bastardized, likely unreliable BBi. I hope the current owner got it cheap enough.

 

right, it is not a koenig, and also not right done as I see it in the photos. ( have a look at the electrical - terrible ! ! ! , then the intercoolers fast attached to the frame )
but a lot of craftmans work and if all work fine why do this rebuilding job? it needs a lot of parts. first to find those all before starting

would be interesting to know as it is just now if all works fine?

 

Just sold on BAT last month.

 

Glad to see someone came to their senses. Good luck with finding parts. That will be the hard part of this job.

Sheehan had this car. I'm glad to see someone restore it but there are plenty of nice ones for sale now that are already done or in great original condition.

 

I think I drove that car at Road Atlanta back in about 2000. If that's the one I have pictures and a video

The auction for this car (chassis 46113) had pictures of the various parts removed (air boxes, cats, exhaust parts, etc) and so I would assume that the auction winner has these. Now, whether everything is/was included.. or that some of the original bits on the car were modified is anyone's guess. However, at least some original bits do not need to be found.

There isn't a lot of them out there. I'll dig up the videos for you.

I remember it belonged to a youngish guy who made a dot com fortune in 2000.

 

Maybe avoid putting that stuff on eBay? It might tempt someone to modify their BBi.....

 

if my BB koenig ( no turbo ) would be a BBi I would buy this stuff and but it in.
I have also the testarossa koenig competition and like the power very much. but for curvy roads I prefer the BB. much better and easier handling. so this BB with the power from the competition would be absolutely fantastic.

 

I might be mistaken but the large aluminum inlet duct (tubes) might be mod'd. Don't they curve 180º the other way to connect to the Bosch fuel distrib's?

I've seen those somewhere offered for what wasn't too crazy of a price. Eurospares perhaps?

 

Curious on that point as well. Maybe drivability issues - who knows?

 

I did the same to an F50 a number of years ago. Only on that car it was simply the entire exhaust system from the heads to the tail pipe tips so in some ways it was easier. Owner assured me he had all parts as told to him by prior owner who paid to have them removed. After unpacking all the boxes, going on a global search and spending an additional $25,000 of the owners money I had enough to put it back stock again. I have been through this exact scenario over the last 30 or so years whether it is returning someones hotrod back to stock, reinstalling the emission equipment or similar, all the parts are never there and in the ensuing years have all become very rare. Been to that movie way too many times to ever consider the claim to be possible. Its one of mankinds most told modern lies.

 

You are correct. They can put those on the list of parts they will need to finish this thing. I hope the budget is large.

 

I undid one as well but unfortunately we didn't have the original engine or gearbox to work with so I put a 512M engine in it. Returning it to original wasn't possible or financially responsible so we had fun instead.

the inlet manifolds look more testarossa than 512 M
you put the alu-radiators in the back. can not see fans? paul, could you post some more photos from this "creation" please. you alraedy did so I remember but never have seen the alu-radiators. no problem with the heat from the exhaust?

same I think will be with this "back built" to original bmcphil is doing now. but nevertheless he also may have fun what will get payed from his customer. hopefully both know how much work all will be

 

No, thats how it came to me, it had a Testarossa twin turbo engine in it that had melted the pistons on one bank. I removed all that and went with a naturally aspirated 512M crate engine from Europsares. And back then it was $25K for a new 512M crate engine. I bought three. Put one in that car and painted it black, I put one in a 1990 Testarossa and sold the other to an American buyer.
