Ok it’s probably coming soon, what are people hearing?
I imagine this is going to be a “real” XX and give access to the coveted factory program, unlike the “fake” XX SF90XX. While I have zero interest in the road-going F80 maybe a real track only car would be fun. The problem of course would be the price tag, would assume €5m+?
If its coming, it's probably 3 or 4 years from now so I'd assume since the 499m was launched last year.
As with the previous XX cars, it would be an adaptation of the road car for the track and not a derivation from the 499P Modificata, which is a lightly-modified LMH car, as in, a real-deal race car. Just because the shape and size and some high-level on-paper characteristics (e.g. engine) look similar doesn't mean the cars will be "similar". Given the nature of the XX Programme, an XX car has to be amateur-friendly, which the 499P isn't. To wit: No ABS: You need proper braking technique. Carbon-Carbon Brakes: You need to heat up the brakes and keep them above operating temperature otherwise they are quite ineffective. Left-Foot Braking: The footwell tunnels make right-foot braking infeasbile. Racing Prototype Cockpit: It's very cramped in there, and getting in and out takes some work. Visibility: Because of the seating position and the size/shape of the windshield and the fenders, visibility is rather limited, which again means one has to have some experience and technique to be able to drive the car well. Single Seater: Can't take your coach with you. Downforce: The car has massive downforce, which requires it to be drive accordingly. No Duplex Live Communications: Can't have the box talk to you or your coach tell you things in real time. Running Costs: Significantly more than the XX cars. Such things constitute a vast departure from the FXX, the 599XX, and the FXX-K, which are all fun to drive but far more approachable for the typical XX client. That's why, they created a third program (Sport Prototipi Clienti) for the 499P Modificata: because the car is as different from an XX car as an F1 car in F1 Clienti is. I expect (and hope) that the next XX car will be a continuation of the XX philosophy, otherwise most clients will not be having fun.
Thank you, those are all excellent points, extremely fascinating and interesting, each point could have its own discussion. (Also this tells me I was being a bit lazy with my thinking when I made the post above)
excellent points, however, I think the cost of running a 499p is more than double that of a a FXXK EVO so I have been warned
More than double: yes, easily. However, we don't yet know how much more because the car hasn't yet existed long enough for all the costs to be sorted out.
Reading your post makes me think again on how fantastic a brand Ferrari is. For racing people, admittedly with plenty of money, where else can you get such a variety of motorsport experiences to participate in while being done so well as Ferrari do? I hope the people who were able to buy a 499P are able to have great fun with it. Assuming they can get in it!
Hi Lance, What is the cost to run an FXXK Evo for a season? Let's say 5 or 6 events and no big shunt.
we would need to divide into 3 categories: entry fees, transportation, and parts, repairs, maintenance. Let’s ignore entry fees and transportation as they are mostly car independent. The FXXK has a 5000 km rebuild cycle of about 110,000 euros, but is every 2 to 3 years, so €40,000 Euros per year. Add about €25,000 per year for gearbox, €10,000 per event for brakes/misc so that would be €50,000 Euros per year. FIA safety systems every five years. This adds up to about €125,000 Euros ($130,000) per year for 5 events plus tires, coaching, entry fees and transport. Fuel is included in the entry fee as well as kit. The value of the car has gone up a lot each year as there are only 40 or so cars and it is a mid engine 12 cylinder.
There are also things like drive shafts, suspension bushings, fuel tank overhaul, high-voltage battery overhaul, other random wear and tear, and car storage fees. These add up as many of the relevant parts are extremely expensive for what they are. If you take everything XX-related you've paid to Ferrari over a (long) period of time and divide it by the number of events you attended in that period: that's your effective per-event cost. (That will still exclude event-related variable costs that you don't pay Ferrari for, e.g., travel.)
My estimate included fuel cell under FIA safety systems as well as bushings and control arms. I did not itemize every item. If you want to know all cost including transportation that depends what tracks you decide to go to. Transport can range from €5k to €50k per event based on means and logistical requirements. For 2024 the entry cost was €20k plus VAT per event. Maybe you should join the XX program and find out yourself.
I was told to prepare to allocate $5M-$8M of total cash based on the car you want plus several full complete seasons of total cost. The mix of operating expense to car cost is significantly different in XX as opposed to Challenge, which includes paint swapping with other cars. XX'rs please correct me here if I am out of range.
I cant believe i am going to say this, but it is not as bad as i thought! Definitely a nice chunk of cash but as you point out, the car has doubled in value (market is $5m? $6m?) so original owners are probably net positive. Which is pretty amazing.
good thoughts. The cost of the XX car depends on the model and the mileage. Approximate values: 599xx $2.5 million, FXX $5 million, FXXF EVO $6 million. Challenge cost more than $1 million a year to run excluding the cost of a car, if you are fighting for championship you need two cars, you get a lot of track time. Challenge car declines 50% in value in 2-3 years or near worthless with a huge crash that may not even be your fault. XX cars are quite rare and seem to go up 10 to 15% a year or more. I plan to do 8 Challenge races this year, for 8 years I usually did a full season of 12. The average Challenge driver is in the series for about 5 years, 2024 will be my 10th year. Some guys go on to do XX, some IMSA, Fanateh GT or some other series.
I’d want a longer sample period concerning values, particularly with the wealth/spending/inflation spike in the post Covid years. That aside just like with big boats and aircraft, the acquisition price of the race car itself has little to do with actual cost of ownership.
