@Carbon777 how's the 488 coming along?...up and running?
Yes on full factory No on power warrantee. 2018 488 7 years full factory warrantee no issues. Take proper care of the Turbos , warm up and cool down and they will love you.
Im curious to know the differences and improvements in the turbos from the 488 to the Pista to the F8. Are there meaningful improvements in the way of sensor for rotational speed and temperature ? Are there new cooling systems to help with shut down heat? Are there mechanical improvements to the turbos themselves?
Do drivers watch the Turbo info screen as they drive? Turbo Boost vs Efficiency ? Too bad both screens cannot be viewed at the same time! Do the screens help us see if there is a problem with one or both turbos?
Problem is if your looking at the sceen your not looking at the road. I believe the Pista turbos are slightly different. As you know every following model has some sort of improvement
Pista and F8 turbo's and same part numbers...488 is a different part number. Pista and F8 is the same engine as said directly from Ferrari's Chief Technical Officer https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/ferrari/f8-tributo/
The Pista and F8 run the same turbos as the 488. The only difference is they added speed sensors, which read the rpm of the turbine wheel to make sure they don't exceed 160k rpm in an attempt to keep the turbo from exploding. Sadly, the turbo design is just garbage and they tend to fail either way.
Thanks for the great info What is the issue with the turbos used on the F8/Pista? Are the turbo themsleves made from a casting process which has natural air pockets? Or is there an issue eith the bearings? Ot is it due to owners not understanding the warm up and cool off ? Ferrari doesn't make the turbos for these 2 models. I believe IHI ?
How common is common? I have 3500 miles on my 488. I survived the Z06 LS7 Valve issues with a warranty fix on my heads before they would have allegedly blown. Is there a preemptive/preventative fix for the factory turbos?
Problem with any of the blown turbos is inaccurate or no information why they did. But at a guess Not properly looked after After market modifications
If your car is stock, no engine mods and you allow the turbo to cool before shutting the car off, you are more than likely not to have issues. It is not common on factory OEM cars and not too common on slightly modded cars. I put almost 10,000 miles on my 488 and never had an issue.
You do realise that mileage generally isnt the problem. Its abuse. Remember the F8 and Pista engines are really dialed up from factory.
I wasn't referring to the general problem. Just one individual event. But regarding the general problem. IMO it is not the 1990s turbo timer era anymore. And the idea you should have to baby a turbo on a 500k supercar to keep it functional is ridiculous.
