I forgot about you guys, and at least one gal. Are you upset? Are you happy? Talk to me. Give one good reason I should go down under.
I hate compulsory tipping. But tipping for good service is fine. In some respects it wouldn’t be a bad thing in Oz because the service here is absolutely ****e. When a pimply 17 year old is getting 80 bucks an hour to grunt in your general direction why would they care?
That must be SA, here we get good service I will tip great service but see no reason to tip for people just doing their job and THAT is all they do in the US. You're paying the wages of the staff of cheapskate owners mostly but every man and his dog EXPECT a 30% "gratuity" for doing nothing !! For example, cab driver in LV travels 4 km from airport to resort I'm staying at , there is a sign that says the fee is USD$21 (that's AUD$32) but then 3 minutes later when we get there he DEMANDS a USD$6 tip (I got the bags out of the trunk) .... welcome to America I'm at the airport to fly to LA, go get a SELF-SERVE sandwich and coke (USD$17), automatically the printout has a 30% tip with an optional 15/20/30% "gratuity" being asked at the bottom of the printout !!! WTF, I selected the sandwich and drink, I carried it to the cashier and I get stiffed for the service ??!! F*** OFF !! I should have been asking for a tip Just pay your staff the correct wage and then pass it on to the clients, tipping is just a rip off , AND I know the reasons it all started so don't go there, this is just greed pure and simple
Take this cheat sheet with you next time you're in the states, if you're in an orange state tell them to FO. Image Unavailable, Please Login
My subscription ended and I decided to take a break from the 'echo chamber' - not missing it, so just not bothering anymore... Life Down Under continues to be a pleasant cycle of surfing, eating, 308 and 500 driving, and various community commitments so all good (although I do pine for both Italy and HK).
I had a cab driver in the US tell me that the meter fee was just for the hire of the cab and not the driver when I went to pay him. I told him that if that was the case he should have told me when I got in and I would have been happy to drive it myself. The biggest thing that pisses me off is that this American “custom” has spread throughout the world. The reason I go to a restaurant is for someone to take my order, cook my food, bring it to me and clean up after I have finished. I really can’t understand why I need to pay a tip for all these services when that is the core business of a restaurant. Having said that, I do pay the tip when I’m in the US as I really feel sorry for the underpaid workers.
I’m with Moretti on this. Tipping is ********. People are employed to do a job. Don’t like it? Do something else. Why is tipping only in service industries that require no real training or education? Should I stand at the bottom of the stairs with my hand out because I didn’t crash the aircraft? Absolute joke.
On a tour of Europe last winter the guide wanted 15 Euro per day for himself and 8 Euro for the driver, 21 day tour, 483 Euro per person and there were 50 people on the tour, 24150 Euro ...... and this is just his and the driver's "tip" Young girl who seemed on drugs most of the time was happy to pay until I asked her what she did, an architect, and I asked her when was the last time she got a 30% tip for doing her job ..... NEVER, so why pay someone for doing their job ??!! Then on a tour of China's natural wonders in October the guides wanted a tip of 200 Yuan each and there were 3 of them and when I refused to pay they asked me to fill out a form with an explanation as to why I didn't pay so I put down she was a lying communist biatchy who refused to refund the 500 Yuan I paid for an optional trip which I was unable to go to due to the chemo reactions BUT they had paid Neralee her 500 for the opera she missed because she didn't want to go to !! Told this cow the 500 Yuan is her "tip" and she could f**k off I loved the accomodation and sights but the guides there are so brainwashed with this communist crap that I sat with headphones on all of the time
Tipping was considered very rude in China up until the late 90s... and it is pretty much still restricted to tourists I think.
I've been to China 4 times and this is the first time I've been I am being pressured into a tip plus the first time I was given this communist dribble

I have to admit, in the US, I felt most at home in Texas the few times I've visited. And I could eat Tex-Mex every day of the week.
