This test fitting in the copper stage is an extra step typical of high-end restorations. Even with 100-percent original and undamaged bumpers, once the bumper fasteners are tightened, slight dimples or waves may develop around the bracketry. After the test fitting, the bumpers return to the plating shop where these dimples are filled and flattened. Theoretically, when the bumpers are fitted a second time in chrome, these imperfections no longer appear.

I must admit I like the copper look. Would it be practical to leave bumpers like that? Or would they turn green after awhile?

Marcel, would original bumpers like these typically be stamped with a chassis or body number? I have seen stampings on original 275 bumpers but not sure of the significance.

Of course, inside the bumpers you will find the chassis number stamped, usually stamped on all four corners, not just one. So one can easily find out if the piece is genuine and original or a later reproduction item.

Scaglietti body number was usually stamped on the inside of the bumpers, and typically on the backside of chrome body trim. The body number was hand-written on the back side of the door panels, and the underside of the rear window shelf card. The body number was also sometimes found written on the seat webbing, together with the original leather number. The body number is also stamped within the engine compartment, at least on later long-nose, on the sheet-metal enclosure above the pedal box. I trust it is found on the short-nose also, but not certain, and do not know where in the engine compartment

It is the chassis number that is stamped inside the bumpers. See below.

Although some two-cams may have the chassis number stamped on the trim, I have observed a number of two-cam cars with the body number, not the chassis number on original bumpers and trim. Probably the mood of the workman on the day.

Is it confirmed (by the registration plate from Bas-Rhin) that this photo shows #10405 in 1983, or could it be #10409 (another 275 GTB/4 supplied new to Franco Britannic Automobiles which definitely had the outside filler cap as factory option)?
