Fellow F40 Owners, Have any of you sourced a set of tires for an F40 recently? I am having issues finding a matching set of front and rear tires. I tried Longstone Classic Tires out of England and they are currently out of stock. I have searched Lucas Classic Tires and all of the usual suspects. Any help or leads would be appreciated. Feel free to private message me. Thank you, Tom
I looked for a set of Michelin tyres earlier this year but no front and rear matching set was available in France. My dealer found a full set of Pirelli and I went for it.
I think the fronts are the problem. The Michelin PS2 is available in 335/35-17 for the rear. But the PS2 front size are not available. I thought I read a while ago that the suggestion was to go to a PS2 in a 225/45-17 front which is a little skinner but at least you have matching tires and tread pattern. Let's see if anyone else remembers this. I have the same problem.
There is a pirelli set available right now from the Ferrari official workshop (Modena Sport) in Biarritz. 3500€ VAT included. Should be ordered quickly as they will close end of next week for summer holidays and not sure if it will be available again in September. If someone is interested send me a PM and I will give you all the contact details so that you can deal directly with them.
ok, having that issue now. have found the michelin ps4 up front and ps2's for the rear. how bad is it to mix and match those 2 sets?
I 'd go with the officially approved tyres: https://www.ferrari.com/en-EN/articles/ferrari-announces-new-tyres-for-the-enzo-ferrari-supercar
I imagine Lando and the other owner in recent weeks are now asking the same question! best avoid whatever those two had already fitted to theirs
I'm in the same boat as I just took delivery of my F40 and will be putting these tires on the car until Pirelli releases (still no confirmed release date) the specified tires. The compound difference is relatively minimal and much safer than running old P7's with hardened compounds!
thats great. thanks for the link. but it doesnt tell you where to get them, and the outlets here in the usa dont seem to list them...
Longstone show the rears and await the fronts so at a guess Classiche type dealers are more likely to be able to access than Tire Rack https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/classic-car-tyres/ferrari/f40.html
Tire rack has the fronts in stock but rears are out of stock until tomorrow, it might be worth a phone call to see if you can order the tires now? (Or order the fronts from tire rack and rears from long stone - but I would be worried about a wide discrepancy in build dates, as well as shipping costs, so Id confirm with both the date codes) https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?tireIndex=1&autoMake=Ferrari&autoYear=1990&autoModel=F40&autoModClar=&frontWidth=245/&frontRatio=40&frontDiameter=17&frontSortCode=50000&rearWidth=335/&rearRatio=35&rearDiameter=17&rearSortCode=51400&performance=ALL
Just ordered them up. There are 16 (now 14) sets of rears coming in tomorrow! Get them while you can, the next batch isn't due till June!! Don
Check the post above mine https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?tireIndex=1&autoMake=Ferrari&autoYear=1990&autoModel=F40&autoModClar=&frontWidth=245%2F&frontRatio=40&frontDiameter=17&frontSortCode=50000&rearWidth=335%2F&rearRatio=35&rearDiameter=17&rearSortCode=51400&performance=ALL
thank you. and are these pirellis actually the new formula ones or just some old stock with the old formula rubber?
i just called tire rack and spoke with the guy for a while. he says the ones posted in the link you sent, are in fact the OLD compound Pirellis, and the new compound is not yet available and will be considerably more expensive. the fronts will be $492.13 and the rears will be $1292.90..... which led me to ask the question about his opinion of running the mismatched michelins....and after he got through the usual disclaimer language, he said if he was not going to the track, then there would be minila problems. he mentioned they act differently in the rain, but i dont take the f40 out in the rain if i can help it anyway. so thats the update i have.
Well, ****……I guess I should have asked the question and not assumed since they were being restocked that they would be the new compound UPS just picked up the Michelins for return. Now I’m wishing I kept them until the new ones are released. Oh well, at least they will be new and not 8 years old like what is on there now. Thanks for the clarification
my guess is those 'old' compound, but new, pirellis will be just fine - just be sure to warm them up before going above 7/10ths my objective is to get the right sized tires in the stickiest rubber i can find, just because for all these cars the tires always end up aging out before they wear out, so might as well get something sticky.
Yeah, that is my thought as well. I also want the stickiest setup, hence the move to the Pilots initially. Oh well, will keep these till they finally release the new ones and go from there.
I put these on my F40 last year and have been pleased. The "tread ware rating" is only 140. Which is very low. But I'm like Ross, want the stickiest rubber I can find and assume the softness is the reason for the short tread ware. Mine will most likely time out before they wear out
