My battery charger worked fine. Then I came into the garage and car woudln't start. if i hooked it up to the battery directly I can see that the charger starts filling the battery. i bought another charger. still no dice. i think the actual port may be broken or some fuse has been blown?

is this something common? can anyone walk me through troubleshooting steps for diagnosing or just swapping that component?

How old is your battery? It may not be able to hold a charge. If its been completely discharged, the chemistry is now corrupted and it will never be the same again.

Forgot to mention that I also tried with a new battery. But once I hook it up directly with clamps then everything works fine. I've basically narrowed it down to the charger port just not working. 2 batteries. 2 cars. 2 chargers. the only thing thats non-functional is the port.

I would check fuse F78 located in the driver side rear side panel -

The port inside under the dash is a simple female plug which can be replaced.
I’d verify that the Factory trickle charging unit is functioning properly. CTEK makes a good trickle charger for AGM

Can someone post a photo of the rear fuse box panel and describe how to remove it?

The 458 Spider manual shows the first photo with a small panel (#3) behind the door, which looks nothing like my larger rear panel in the second photo..

Is your charging port on the exterior of the car? If so, you should try cleaning the contacts. On the Lusso it’s near the license plate—and it gets filthy. On an F8, it’s above the license plate. I was having trouble with the tender making clicking noises and only showing a blinking light. Dealer recommended that I clean the contacts with steel wool. I don’t do that, but a paper towel with some vinegar worked.

    Thanks!
I tool a look at Scuderio Auto and could not find the video of the rear panel removal. He may have removed that.
It seems like that panel has push pins holding it in place, but it would be a great help if you could share any memory about how you pulled the panel off?

It looks like Mike may be doing some updates to his video library. The cover removal is pretty easy - on a difficulty scale, it's probably a 1 or 2 out of 10; just take your time.

Essentially, pull the weatherstrip covering the seam of door in the panel area. Underneath at the base you will find a Torx 25 screw holding it in place at the base/bottom. I think you only need to loosen it (rather than remove it). From there pull from the bottom in a pendulum motion. You are correct that at the top portions it stays in place with hangers. It will feel a little uncomfortable as it slightly flexes but it will come off that way. From there you should be left with something similar to my photos.

The reinstall procedure is the opposite, but that can be tricky with insulation and carpeting etc. If its not going back easily just check that the line up is correct at the top - it can get caught on these elements and be slightly off and when you get to the set screw you will find yourself wondering why its not lining up.

My car has had this port replaced in its history, so failure of the port itself is possible.
