can't comment on the sound but they lights look just absurd. what were they thinking? Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm reading all the posts with sympathy, but whatever turns out with it in real, from now on we have to expect worse for the future I guess. The non-turbo era V8s' sound will attract next generation as V12 Colombo did to us.
Just found this video of 296 driving in the parking lot. As I suspected it sounds just like the Maserati MC20 V6. 2022 New Ferrari 296 GTB - V6 SOUND & START UP - YouTube Thank God I ordered my F8.
They really don't want you to hear this car without music and special effects, do they? And the tag line "fun to drive" for a Ferrari is just sad.
From Ferrari Magazine: https://www.ferrari.com/en-EN/magazine/articles/six-packed-the-history-of-the-v6 “Indeed, some sense of how the V6 engine sounds and performs can be gleaned from the fact that, during its development the engine earned itself the nickname ‘piccolo V12’ – little V12. How would Dini himself describe its sound? “It’s very involving,” he says. “You can feel the performance from the sound, right in your stomach. The air being sucked in, the injectors, the combustion, the exhaust – it’s like an orchestra.”
at the Tampa 296 event they started it up and we all thought it sounded really good shockingly good...many comments about how the 296 sounds way way better that the F8.
This is a very informative article about how V6 and V12 engines can sound the same because of architecture. \ There is very significant work for each vehicle model on induction and exhaust that each create and/or modify sound. Then there is the issue of how that sound is delivered into the car interior. Both passively and actively. Passively can be as simple as material or headliner channeling for some vehicles on induction to radiate a certain sound frequency into the cabin. As well as diffusion for the exterior. Ferrari has a brand on sound and I am sure they are focused on delivering it in innovative ways. https://www.carthrottle.com/post/why-do-different-engine-configurations-make-different-sounds/ Then there is the issue of turbocharging which can effect maximum rpm compared to an NA engine. Which limits the turbo car's high end frequency and volume. Great video here of hearing the sound on Fiorano. I am confident that the 296 will sound better than the F8. Significant work on tuning on induction/exhaust/etc is a big plus for the 296. SF90 to Pista range is my guess.
Just to remind the GPF and turbocharged 296 6-cylinder hybrid does not sound anything like the V12 in an F12 or non-GPF 812. Different universe. Not sure if you were implying such.
I thought the 296 would sound like the 2006 F1 car. At least. Agree that it is not going like the TdF or a 2019 812. But I do believe much better than the F8. So I wasn't suggesting another universe into the ultra excellent land of the V12 we love. Just in the same solar system.
Not sure about this but I do not believe that F1 cars have a gas particle filter (GPF), muffler or silencer?
Ok, I guess no one is getting my sense of humor in the last couple of posts I believe the great state of California I am in is about to rule that all F1 cars need to have GPF, silencers, mufflers, and cones of silence that hover above the car that scavenge sound and pollution. The governor of California has made a decree stating that all cars except the 296 must be this way. lol. Happy New Year to all.
conclusion after reading this thread: we live in sad era of vacuum cleaners invasion let's hope atlest successors of 812, Avendador or Huracan will keep NA, after varanty you can remove GPF, there was some issuse with sensorce but top exhaust system producers will solve it
3 years later what’s the verdict here? I think the GTB sound is very satisfying. I love the high pitch when you time the up shifts just right. downshifts I don’t get the same level of excitement. But bottom line is I very much like the engine note of my 296.GTB. brian
Like it a lot better than 488, F8, and Roma. May like the engine note almost as much as Lusso, F12, and 812 GTB but not quite as much. Every Ferrari 12 I have tried feels ponderous to me now (haven't tried TDF or 812C) though so not looking for one. Growing to like it more than even 458 but that's certainly an unpopular opinion. About 1/2 of my reasonable throttle upshifts do a pow that's a bit like the V12 upshifts - agree, never get that on downshifts though.
I like the 296GTB sound as well. Out of 2010-2019 V12 road cars, like the TdF first for sound. It’s amazing. Close second is the LaFerrari. Never driven the 599GTO. 812C is 2023 for me and thus subject to GPF sound restraint; given that, it’s very good but not TdF sound quality. Also, I have valve controller on my TdF which keeps the remaining 2 valves open. Fantastic. Out of mid engine cars, the 2 most fun of the 2001 to present to drive including drive and sound are the 458 (don’t own speciale) and the 296. All IMO.
I like the sound of my 296. Obviously it does NOT sound as good as a NA V12. But it is by far the best sounding ferrari of the last 10 years after that. I've never fallen in love with any of the V8Turbo Ferrari's, mainly because the sound didn't move me. Testdriving the 296 immediately made it clear to me it sounds way way better. I like the tone, the crescendo, the naughty blow offs of the turbo,... Not "arm hairs standing up" good, like NA V12. But very very well done in the light of EU regulatory crap.
The 296 def builds into a crescendo but the V12 and some of the less tame Porsche 6s do generate harmonics, maybe the 4RS. Changing harmonics through the rev as well as building volume (and some older Lamborghinis, though maybe less newer ones?). If they can nail that with the next 296-ish engine, plus that transmission pow on all upshifts and downshifts in race, with the agility and lighter feel of the chassis, could be pretty amazing.
it's interesting how we all search for the right words to connote the sound of the engine and how it makes us feel. 296 downshifts sound like a computer, if that makes any sense, which is not particularly good. But again, I think the upshifts sound very satisfying (most of the time.) The downshifts in my 458 are the best. Like when you're pulling up to a light coming down fairly quickly from 4th to 1st gear. Smiling just thinking about it. Brian
The 296 sounds ok but i certainly wouldn’t rave about it as if its something utterly amazing. This picolo v12 nonsense is just that - Ferrari marketing at its best - sounds nothing at all like a v12 to me. Nowhere near as visceral as a v12 at 9000 - not even close. Its better than an F8 which isn’t at all hard to do, but compared to a v10 lambo or 3rs, 296 isn’t in the running by any stretch of the imagination. The reality is 296 sounds only mildly good considering what it should sound like, if only Ferrari were truly serious about providing a proper sounding sportscar - which clearly isnt on their list of priorities as how it was in days gone by.
