Now this is engineering. Great video explanation of the patent. It combines a 4-stroke and 2-stroke engine.
Yea, watched that the other night. Germans making things way too complex for no reason.. shocking. BMW's and Mercedes are terrible enough as is. Ray
Car makers are offering electric/combustion hybrids so why not 4stroker/2stroker hybrids. This opens-up quite some possibilities in terms of emissions: if they do not fire the second stroke (which is a 2 stroke), the engine is as clean as a 4 stroke, if both strokes are fired you get 24% power increase. The epicycloïd cranckshaft is just what has been used for years in 3speed automatic teansmissions, so we can assume that it should be possible to build a reliable one. Too bad it's arriving a bit late at the party. 15 years ago, would have certainly impressed many. Nowaday they should focus on a purely electric or an oldschool flat 6 with gated shifter.
At about 100% higher cost -- this is going nowhere, and will never exist in a commercial application, as the gain is just too small for the huge complexity/cost.
