So here is my review of 360Trev’s tune for my 612 OTO. Housekeeping: I paid in full for the tune, this is not a paid Ad. Why tune it? I wasn’t pleased with the way the car drove with the factory ECU parameters. There were three main things I wanted to improve: 1. Throttle map 2. Improved shifting 3. Installing @brogenville 599 MAF retrofit mod for inexpensive performance gains The tuned ECUs came back yesterday, I drove about 80 miles with the new tune and what a difference! Let’s talk about the shifting, this alone is worth the price of the tune. Trev has somehow made the ECU and the transmission work in perfect coordination. Shifting is now very precise. The ECU matches the RPMs perfectly and there is no lag. All the jerkiness from the factory tune is gone, I don’t have to lift to change gears and gone is the F1 gearbox shifting gears head movement that makes you look like you don’t know how to drive. Throttle map and engine performance upgrade. Big changes here as well, the torque delivery is quite determined throughout the power band. There is no lack of torque anywhere. So much torque, that I am considering upgrading to a stickier rubber as the 4S are barely hanging on. The throttle responds quickly and very predictably. I told @sammyf yesterday that Ferrari should write this tune to every 612 they made. It is this good. Installation difficulty for the ECU is 2/10. The way Ferrari installed the ECUs is a bit challenging as they are held by a foam adhesive, and there is not a lot of leverage to get them out. Patience and elbow grease did the trick. The MAF upgrade installation difficulty is 3/10. The OTO already has airboxes and filters that are the same as the 599, with the exception of the airbox covers. Sourcing the left hand cover was a challenge. Everything is pretty straightforward and “plug and play”. Here is the list of parts that I ended up installing for this mod: 220386 599 GTB airbox cover RH AC 141 R 220387 599 GTB airbox cover LH AC 141 L 224509 599 GTB intake hose RH (elbow) 224510 599 GTB intake hose LH (elbow) 189710 CLIP (most of the elbows on the market have broken clips, easy and cheap to replace) 190151 CLAMP 13433570 CLAMP / COLLAR FOR HOSE UNION 223039 AIR FILTER 180045 AIR FLOW METER 197983 Gasket (since I was already pulling the airboxes, it was a good time to replace the intake gaskets preventively) Thanks @sammyf @brogenville @360trev this car is a lot more enjoyable now!
This sounds super exciting! Congratulations and thank you for sharing. I have couple of follow-up questions: 1. Does this tune change the shift times at all? 2. does this tune work better for OTOs that have the 599 clutch plates or even with the non OTOs? cc @360trev @brogenville
you can improve shift times by doing the 360trev tcu reflash; I can’t really comment though as mine was manual. In terms of OTO, I don’t see it making any real difference compared with earlier cars- both would be brilliant.
HGTE on the 599 decreased min shift times from 100 ms to 85 ms if Trev has access to one of those TCUs. Would be hard to tell the difference in real world use, though. 15 ms is a pretty small interval.
Thank you. The reason I asked is because I remember Jim Glickenhaus posting that while he could do any shift time tune for his Enzo based P4/5 it was pretty hard on the clutch. Apparently this is also the reason why Ferrari chose much more aggressive shift times with the beefed up clutch plates they introduced 599 onwards (same with OTO).
No, I agree, but it is hard work on the gearbox syncro's. You can feel this in the manual cars, especially from cold.
