My '85 QV has an ugly aftermarket radio/entertainment "center". I would like to put back something that fits. I am old, deaf, cantankerous and opinionated. Therefore concert-series sound is not a plus. Besides, I want to hear the exhaust! Any suggestions for near-original, or just good looking?

    Thanks

My understanding is that the radios were dealer installed, therefore there isn't a factory unit per se. Probably any period correct units would work, and for a Mondial probably toward the high-end. It looks as if CD's came out around 1985 but didn't surpass cassette sales until 1988, so probably a cassette. My car has an Alpine tape deck that seems about right. I've replaced the drive belts on it, but it is still unreliable to the point of being useless.

It's a Pioneer KE4300 with a Ferrari faceplate. Got one in Classifieds (read the text regarding the faceplate etc)

Not original, but the VDO Continental is a great option with good sound that looks very appropriate (low key) for the cars:

I haven't put one in my Mondial yet, but had one installed in one of my old 911s and it sounded great and looked sharp without being distracting. The bluetooth option is nice as well to play tunes from your phone/spotify.

There was a guy who used to take vintage radios and give them modern guts. Damn, I wonder if I can find an old invoice. He did the radio for my Dino. I'll go dig around.

Nah - ham radio gear is one thing - vintage car radios something altogether different. Not my thing.

Modern radios look really out of place in a Mondial interior in my opinion.

For a North American 1985 car, there's a chance it would have been sold with a Blaupunkt Memphis SQR 04 (SQR 04 up until the 3.2 - my 3.2 has a SQR 06).

These radios require a separate amp which might be missing from your car if you have a modern head unit.

The Mondials were apparently the first cars Ferrari delivered with a radio as standard.
QVs were delivered with the Pioneer KE-4300 and TS-168 three way speakers in the front doors.
The aerial was an Autovox SA-86 and operated by the spring loaded switch in the centre console.

Reach out to Gary Goodman at Goodman Radio in Bryn Mawr, PA. He's old-ish and cantankerous too, but he's also an FCA concours judge and did a ton of installs for Algar from the mid-late 70's until at least the late 90's. He's a great guy, hugely knowledgeable. He did the install on my Dino and later on my 360.

The Blaupunkts were commonly used on the Euro cars, in period they would be the ones with a cassette tape. Cassettes were still around into the early 90's, in around 1990 the first Blaupunks with CD's came out.

I have a Blaupunkt Paris model, which would have been a 1990's model, still with a cassette. There were different Paris models going back to 1983. Fairly available in used but good condition, mine was rewired to have jack where you can plug your cell phone in and play music from your device. I thought that was appealing, but I have never used it, and rarely put the radio on. Maybe in a traffic jam on occaison. The unit has a code, if it gets stolen it is useless without the code, which makes sense for a convertible.

It looks nice and period correct, the sound is fine, and it was a really simple install. The speakers are going to be the limiting factor for sound quality.
