Price of classic exotics has always been directly related to production numbers. That is why the Testarossa will never be a pure collectable and will not go too high in terms of pricing. And that is also why the 512M gets SOME kind of attention from collectors, which obviously drives the prices higher.

    Tell that to 911 owners…. Or 914… or 930.

Millions made, selling for 10-20x original price…

OK, but which of the 248468 versions of the 911 are you talking about?

‘You said Testarossas won’t go up due to volume made…. It’s a point with a significant fallacy…

120,000 Porsche 914’s were made. A good one sells for 20-30k, some more. New, they were $4k. That’s a 500%+ gain on a very high volume, low rarity car…

1976 Porsche 911S. One of the least reliable, least collectible 911’s. 7k$ new. 50-70k for a crappy one now. 1000% gain, on a high production undesirable car.

If testarossas merely followed the trajectory of a crappy 76 911s, they would be $1million dollar cars.

You do realize, that there is a little detail, called inflation, right?

Second - you really consider a 914 as a collector car? With a price of 20 000, that anyone can afford? I think you said some people made millions. Is that from 20K 914s or from 1976 991s for 60K?

    No comparison here, I'm afraid.

    Open this link:

    https://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm

and check what is 4000 USD in 1971 calculated to today's money. And then you can tell me again about the 500% gain.

And anyway, some kind of a price appreciation has nothing to do with a car being a collector's item, which will generally drive the price crazy.

I give up. You said testarossas won’t go up due to volume. I gave many examples where other cars did.

You now mention inflation, which undermines your comments. If testarossas just kept up with inflation, they would be worth 900k. These cars listed at 150k, sold at 300k when new (over sticker). With inflation alone, these would be million dollar cars.

    ‘Yet, puzzlingly, they aren’t.

Some fault repair costs, but that’s a fallacy too. If these cars just kept up with inflation, maintenance would be irrelevant. What’s a $25,000 major on a million dollar car? Nuthin…

I'm not sure you are getting the point here at all, so no real reason to continue this.

Time will tell if I'm right or not. For the moment I am definitely right. 512Ms appreciated a lot, Testarossas haven't.

But in the mean time, it will be good for people to remember, that these cars are mainly for having fun and not only to think about money and investments.

The 512M went up because it went up.

Some models are trading like meme stocks ... so long as there are extremely gullible people (on batty bat for example) willing to pay double the going rate,
whether genuinely, socially engineered or some good old shill bidding.

    https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/1995-ferrari-f512-m-1

And I'm not singling out the 512M. Technically the 512TR went up even more considering rarity etc.

Not really. There is no such thing as people spending money without reason. It went up because there are only 500 made. Simple. Ask any collector why he bought one instead of a 512TR for example. Surely it is not because of looks.

Most people follow the established trend. Hence some Porsche valuations, Ferrari V8 valuations, etc.

Currently at least, the Testarossa family is too "good" for the avg. buyer and not "good" enough for the high end buyer, particularly the Testarossa.
However, all of the TR's have more cachet than their price would suggest.

Good video, even mentions the gearbox/engine sealant issue. Although the Crema and Magnolia he mentions are the same color.

The fact that this thread is almost a year old and 10 pages of back and forth, should tell you all what you need to know about TR prices.

after 22yrs of ownership i sold in 2022 … its the same price today as it was back then. I did give it away, the TR is worthless and has always been. Hate to break it to you. But if you still love driving it, then thats whats most important.

Yep. Compliments on the 22 years of ownership. Weren't they about $60k in 2000? Same as a 246. :)

Ironically, it will only appreciate considerably, if/when people who don't really care about it as a car start buying it.

In the interim, there's the "80's icon" and the cliche complaints, "cheese graters are dated", "it's heavy", "it's a cruiser"
Meh. The brakes could be better though.

    Gotta repost this

60k US cars were dead cars that needed interior work, pulled speedos, melted electrical boxes. Good to great cars were pulled into that price point. And prices kept there! And yes Dino’s did hover around that as well. And Countashs were around 80k - 90k.
As per your example, thank you for proving my point, Dino’s and Countashs more than doubled if not 3x what a TR is today.
If you look at my posts of 2013 when you joined, you will see in this section i fougjt for TR prices and how great it was, more than you! I actually started in 2003.
The TR is a great car, best bang for the buck in the 12 cyl Ferrari line up. Unfortunately, after 40yrs it’s labelled the Rodney Dangerfield. It gets zero respect a collector classic. Its only going up because of inflation, not because collectors or followers want it like the dino/countash. Sorry to break it to you, it is what it is. Maybe the 512TT and 512M perform better in the collection market?
PS - im happy you love the car this much and fighting for it, hope it gives you all the pleasures you desire, you did earn it and paying for it, so i wish you nothing but the absolute best with your car!

the TR is still beautiful, its just financially worthless :p

I think its iconic status and bold almost pretty looks will keep it unique and sought after.

There is nothing like this car. And there will never be anything like this car. That is its strength if viewed as an investment.

Sounds fair. Let's call it the TR paradox. One of F's most iconic and outlandish models with a rather sedate valuation profile.

Valuations, particularly the 246/Countach kind, have more to do with the social factor than the cars themselves.
There are still interesting cars that don't carry a "social" premium, and the TR is one of those, despite its iconic status.

Current prices aside, the TR is still compared to the Countach and attracts similar attention. Won't get that with a similarly priced F, 8 or 12cyl.

Considering what it is I'm sure there will be other attempts to inflate it, the "more unique ones", single mirror, single nut, yada yada,
    likely to get more attention.

None of that is going to change what the TR is, so if you like it, great, sweet car at a sweet price.
As a financial investment, it may underperform.

Leno also bought an Espada over the 330 GTC when they were priced similarly. Despite current valuations, he made the right choice - he's not getting those years back.

The current value of the TR makes it enjoyable to drive and own without worry. If the value was way up, owners would just sit on them and store them!

Ferrari felt the pressure to move the engine in the middle? Say what?

Pedals to the right? Like every other mid engine classic F.

    Lots of space? Too good.

    Steering is heavy? What?

Grand tourer yada yada. No car that big is going to be ultra tossable.

    Unfortunately repeating all the cliches.

First of all, the car is US spec. It is black and it has 6K miles. Obviously all these things will reflect the value. However, that doesn't change the fact, that I mentioned.
