Went on a spirited chilly morning drive, which was way foggier than anticipated, and the car hadn't been driven for a few weeks. About 10 miles into the drive I pushed the clutch in and blipped the throttle to downshift into second gear while coming up to a stop sign. Most dash lights came on and the engine turned off. No problem, this has happened a few times over the past couple of years when downshifting and blipping to second. Clutch in, still rolling in neutral, turn the key, after turning over a bit longer than usual the car comes back to life, and we're good to go. Made it back home with no issues.

My question is does anyone know what could cause the engine to die out when blipping the throttle aggressively when downshifting? In all previous instances that the engine turned off it was generally going from 3rd gear to 2nd gear and while blipping in neutral getting ready to shift it into 2nd. As i've mentioned this has happened a few times over the past couple of years and its a fairly intermittent problem. Any thoughts on what would cause the engine shutoff?

Would have thought a electrical disconnect temporarily,
The fact it’s in N so unloaded maybe it rotates a bit more on it’s mounts than when gunning it in gear causing this “ disconnect “

I guess check all the connections especially Earth straps + umbilicals that transgress engine to chassis . Try some contact cleaner and stabiloc 22 or similar. Clean up the crank sensors too and check the gap .

Engine stalling after a throttle blip is not related to between what gears, or whether in neutral, the blipping is done. A few things that can cause this issue:

    1. The engine ECU re-learning process is not properly performed after a battery disconnect; I suggest you perform the re-learning before going to other things.

    2. The throttle body air bypass screw set incorrectly; should be at some 1.5 to 2 turns out:

    3. The Idle Control Valves need cleaning (or, possibly, replacement).

    4. Make sure that all the vacuum lines are in good condition at connected properly.

    5. The throttle bodies need to be adjusted so that they are in absolute synch opening and closing, and that they come to a rest via the throttle stops at the exact same time.

    6. The throttle position sensors are adjusted to within spec.

    7. The throttle bodies need to be balanced with a manometer.

    8. The at rest idle needs to be adjusted to spec, about 950/rpm. Verify the spec with the workshop manual. (When I adjusted mine I did it with the idle air control valves unplugged from the harness)

Now if that doesn't do the trick then,

    9. The fuel pressure needs to be checked.

    10. The fuel injectors need to be sent out for flow testing and cleaning.

Pull out the bypass screw and clean them, there is a high probability they are gummed up as well. The put back in after cleaning and set the same. Should at least get you past this issue or allow you to rule that out. Check the TB's are in synch, previous owners loved messing with stuff they have no business messing with trying to correct issues incorrectly. It is outlined in the manual.
