In period 2819 GT retained its 4 speed SWB gearbox and was not uprated to 5 speed to match the GTO. To mount the engine lower and further back in the chassis it was dry sumped. The big barrel 46 DCF3 Weber X 3 of this originally Sefac Hot Rod spec 250 GT SWB Competizione were replaced with Weber 38 DCN X 6.
So when was the 5 speed box fitted ??? ??? When my friend John Harper raced it for Martin Johnson I seem to remember it had a 4 speed box ??
That is not 2819 GT. It is the clone made for its owner. They fooled me when, at Le Mans Classic 2022 on the Friday evening they suggested I sit in it. I was just reminiscing racing it there 14 years earlier in 2008 with the previous owner's family. But it was the clone, crashed hard by the owner's son that 2022 Sunday at the Mulsanne straight first chicane.
Was thinking, it was the clone. Saw the real car several times and than it was said, it is under restoration. Next time I saw it, I thought "damn.. again a massive overrestored car". That car was the clone, also fooled me the first time I saw it.
If you examine the cockpit it all looks too new...because it is. I you have doubts about a car being the real one or a clone always look at the cockpit. I also noticed the profile is not exactly the same, you can't see it when it goes by on track but if you compare photos of the real car from the time of the previous owner and recent ones of the clone you can see it. I believe the current owner MH decided on making the clone when he had a scary cockpit fire during a race weekend at the Nurburgring a few years ago; his face was slightly burned. That would motivate anyone to be decisive in avoiding a repeat situation, both in terms of driver safety -his sons and the very good English technician in charge race it mainly- and protecting the real car. Here photos when I arranged for the car to come to be the star of the weekend at 500 Ferrari contre le cancer/Sport et collection 2019. It won best of show and I wrote a two page presentation of it and its history in the program. Nobody other than them knew it was the clone because nobody knew the clone existed. They kindly offered me to drive it again, I got into my race suit, my helmet...but they are all jockey sized as is the seat which I am not(!) so it was impossible for me to fit in it: no go. I rode in it in the parade instead. Yes, it is a real nightmare to sit in 2819 GT or its clone. Years ago I entered the genuine 2819 GT at Palm Beach/FL, when it was with Monte Shalett, and I particularly remember the left A-Pillar which was directly AT my left eye. Did not feel comfortable. But somehow I was able to exit again. Marcel Massini
If 2819 GT shown at the 2019 Sport & Collection "500 Ferrari contre le cancer" event was already the clone, how many times afterwards have we seen this clone or the real car? It is clear that the car at the 2022 Le Mans Classic and the 2023 Goodwood Revival was the clone, but what about the Silverstone Classic, Bernina Gran Turismo etc?
Yes back in Monte Shalett's days the seat was bolted very far forward and it was a real struggle to get in and out as the door is so narrow. The Werners who bought it in 2005 then relocated it, backed up against the rear wall which came halfway up the seat back. It made me worry that if someone crashed the car hard backwards their spine could suffer badly. Bizzarrini would have wanted a door extending further front below the glass area, like on a Bizzarrini 5300 GT but it was not a priority and there was no time when Neri & Bonacini made the body, they had to get it to Le Mans very quickly.
