    The reason imported cars are taxed is heavily in NL, is because they use a lot of gas. The more they used the higher the cost. That’s why the big suvs and trucks, and other gas guzzler aren’t even offered anymore. Pricewise they don’t make sense.

    Almost, as in after it's imported, right?

    Don't mix up the two. Not the same thing.
    You have to pay the pollution tax for any vehicle.

    Do you pay a pollution tax every year?
    In some EU countries it's paid once, when registering the car, but most have yearly fees.

    I know. My f12 was imported too. The pollution tax is charged only when acquiring the vehicle. The % of the original pollution tax (bpm) goes down with the age of the car. Besides, there is a quarterly road tax on every car.

    You are mixing tariff and VAT (equivalent to state sales tax).

    The fact that various EU countries have VAT regimes and include (actually give discount to) all goods and services that get transacted in that territory is the same as NY Sales Tax or California Sales tax.

    For classic cars imported in France from the USA, duties are 5.5%.

    He's not mixing it up. When you import a car from outside EU you have to pay the Vat. Otherwise you don't because it has already been paid.

    You pay a reduced Vat on classic cars but everything else gets the full 19%+ Vat.
    Pretty much anything entering the EU gets +30% added on top of the sale price - fact.

    The comical (but expected) EU response to the US tariffs is more lunatic taxes.

    Wrong, if I buy a made in France Renault 5, a made in Italy Ferrari or a made in USA Tesla in France, I will pay 20% of VAT.
    Very different than having tarriffs on everything imported while exempting what is made domestically.

    you are wrong.

    but more importantly

    if you import a car (a classic car) from EU into the USA who e yo register it in NY, CA or any of the tens of states with Sales Tax, you will pay that sale tax.


    I don't see how that makes it a Tarrif, either in the USA or EU

    The US sales tax applies to all used cars, imported or not.

    The EU Vat applies to imported used cars only (no Vat paid on cars already in the EU)

    There is no “US sales tax.” Each state does there own thing, and several states have no sales tax at all.

    Each country sets its own,

    There is no import duty (unlike in the U.S. which is now 2.5pct about to go 10x...)

    No - that is the VAT!

    VAR is *reduced* for Historic cars - irrespective of thier manufacturing geography

    Semantics taking over facts.

    US states are part of the US. Just like EU states are of the EU. And most have taxes.

    In the US the sales tax is not part of importing the car. It's part of the registration.

    The sales tax would be paid irrespective whether the car came from the EU or the US.

    In the EU the Vat is payable when importing the car from outside EU. The Vat wouldn't be paid on an EU car.

    So, the EU Vat applies as an import tax. The US sales tax doesn't. (and I'm not talking about US federal tax)

    Vat gets paid one time, right? If you buy a car from someone within the EU you're not paying the Vat again.

    In the US you have to pay the sales tax each time the car is sold and registered.

    US sales tax does not mean US federal sales tax.

    Similarly, EU Vat refers to the EU member states Vat, which also varies.


    Does your vehicle use tax apply to imported cars?

    what is VAR?

    when you buy a car outside the EU and import it to the EU, it does not matter if it is a EU car or not or of it already has been registered in the EU or not, also it does not matter how old the car is ( of course must be older than 6 month ) you have to pay 10 % EU customs and also VAT , depends on the country where you live. in germany 19 %

    may be the rules/law changed? long time ago I imported cars from outside EU

    If you buy in the EU from another country in the EU, there are typically two cases:
    - the VAT of the original sale could be refunded (possible if the initial purchase was financed) - in this case it is deduced from the price, and the VAT of the state of destination is applied on the full new selling price
    - the original VAT could not be refunded - in this case the VAT is applied to the seller's margin in the destination country
    Some sellers have used schemes to fraud using these two possibilities (claiming the VAT back in the original country, and then only charging the VAT on margin in the destination country, by virtually using a third intermediate country to confuse taxing systems - however I believe this has now been made more difficult).

    this all only is when you buy from a dealer or a business company. if you buy from privat there is no VAT at all

    Typically the private seller cannot get the VAT back, and does not make any margin (he sells for less than he paid).
    I'm not sure what tax implications it would have in another case (if he had some taxes to pay it would be passed on the buyer, even if not shown).
    Anyway, it's true that the principle if that the VAT is only paid once (when it's claimed, it means it has not been already paid - because it's been reimbursed, or there is an additional amount - the margin - for which it has not been paid yet).
