GM's Unexpected Success with the Hummer EV

I never had it happen. I am talking about writing a story about some business venture, evidencing some trepidation on its chances for success and instead it's a roaring success.
That's what happened a few days ago when i wrote about the new GM EV Hummer. I was worried GM was spending too much on a big ol' EV.
I mean I know pickup trucks outsell cars but with Tesla, Bronco, and Rivian all coming out with off road capable trucks or EVs II thought GM was too late (2021 model). Especially when they are starting out with the most expensive model (over $100,000) and bringing out lower price versions in 2022 and 2023.
    Boy was I wrong.
They sold out of the first year's planned inventory.
    In one hour.
And here we are in a pandemic, with many people laid off and their economic future threatened.
I can imagine some reasons why GM's offering was so successful. First, people yearn to go off-road, a lot more of them than went in the past but they didn't like the fire-spittin' rip-roaring off road vehicles of the past.
Secondly this ought to be a vehicle that will qualify for "perks" like being able to go where internal combustion vehicles can't. If you don't think there will be discrimination against internal combustion vehicles you haven't read the goals of The Green New Deal.
Finally though I be a sports car fan, I realize that performance won't be measured by the traditional ways. It's how much torque now (I am still reeling from the Hummer EV's 11,000 ft-lbs. of torque). It'll be range you can go after a re-charge. It'll be how big is the dash screen?
I am from Michigan originally so I'm proud that my fellow Michiganders developed this and correctly anticipated where the market is going. And I enjoy competition, so I like to see Elon Musk, who heretofore is proving to be as unbeatable as Jeff Bezos, be handed some competition.
So congratulations, GM, you're building what folks want....

Hideously ugly turd of a vehicle, nobody will seriously go off road in these. Much like the most Jeep's, the Hummer will be a boulevard cruiser that never see's dirt or rocks, but will see trendy Boutiques and restaurants. All the while making the owner feel good about themselves and their low "carbon footprint", except all the oil it took to produce it.

    Wheels look like bead locks.
I’m interested to see how it lives up to the stats. If the tech is good you’ll see it filter down to the regular trucks.

Sorry, not sorry, I loved driving the Hummer EV SUV. It's fast, and a middle finger to the regular EV crowd. Renting one next week for an extended test drive, the leases are really attractive right now.

Thought this would be big hit for gm. Celebs would replace g wagon which was still gas only w hummer. Still don't understand why didn't catch on. And now electric g wagon will be final nail in hummer 10k lb coffin. Too bad

I never understood the price and the purpose of the "crabbing" feature. I also think Hummer has a bad connotation. Its too much in your face for a lot of people. Its the "F - U" of vehicles.

True but g wagon is middle finger too. Especially if amg version. But green celebs love them so why not electric hummer?

Btw, wonder what environment impact of huge hummer EV is compared to midsize gas SUV. Probably worse

It IS an F-U to most EV people in that it is big, useful, and actually is more of a car than an appliance. It has buttons, big comfy seats, it can go anywhere, and it looks good. The crab walk for city folks is not so useful, but offroad, it does make sense in the rare instance where if you know you know why you need it.

Range is not great, but it is not for efficiency, if you want that, the Caddy and Chevy trucks get up to freeway 460 miles.

Here's the one I rented off Turo over the weekend. Leases can be as low as 750/month, and it can charge at Tesla stations, so it is becoming attractive to me

AMG G wagens are mostly plastic fake vents and parts, especially the Brabus versions. Bolting on 300lbs of carbonn fiber that retain heat and cause more drag on a brick. Plus the people that drive them tend to be garbage.

And I bet G wagons and Hummers sell about the same amount in the US. And zero hummers in Europe.

Can you point me to where you are finding lease offers at $750/month? Thanks

There are guys working deals on FB, reddit and leasehackr. There are fake addons like a $4k theft protection cost you need to have removed, have a Costco membership, and live in a state that has an EV rebate. Demo models usually have under 500miles on them and dealers can't sell them so the depreciation there and you may shop out of state. I think TX has too many on lots, so you may get lucky on a new '24. There is no change to the '25 other than colors.

Loads of fake dealer adverts proimising as low as 699/m but I don't believe them.

I met a broker with a fee of $800, shipping is $2300 to CA, $5k DAS, so the end payment is $750-799/m for 10k a year for 3 years. I'm still making sure the deal is legit, some people are good at negotiating their own deals to get that, I have to get some help, I'm new to leasing and suspicious. I expect the actual payment is 850/m but that is still pretty good and I should be able to write off some of the cost.

My best friend picked one of these up a few weeks ago and he loves it. I drove it and felt the brakes are a little weak, but otherwise it was a great truck. I actually owned an H2 back in the day and this one reminded me of a newer improved version of it. It’s absolutely lightening quick and incredibly comfortable inside.

Yeah, the brakes are a whole thing, i use the regen a lot, but it is big with big tires, so distance is not fntastic in a panic. I'm totally digging it and have been launching it and it's keeping up with my BMW X6M, maybe even edging it out in launch
