That’s interesting. I did not know they flight tested the X-31 after removing the vertical tail and rudder. Too bad the F-22 did not have yaw vectoring to reduce the size of its huge control surfaces. I did a NASA wind tunnel test in the 90s on a F-15 that showed removing the tails could reduce drag by almost 16%. It’s fine as long as the engine is running so maybe they cannot be totally removed but downsized, at least…someday.
