My cam belt service came to a dead stop when I couldn't pull the harmonic balancer off the front of the crankshaft. I had heard a few horror stories about these delaminating or otherwise getting damaged whilst struggling to get them off. There also wasn't enough room to fit my hydraulic puller without removing the radiator and I decided to make up a purpose built puller just for this job.

Hopefully the photos tell the story.... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

    Good job.
Interesting timing as I am going exactly through this with a Bristol 2L engine. The damper carrier won't come off but at least the workshop manual features drawings of all special tools required for major engine work.

There are some who intend to have the damper rebuilt when they take it off if is has not been done before. There are a good number of reports where they have failed in service. So if you pull it part when trying to remove that's the best time for it to fail and then you can get it rebuilt. There is a company that was rebuilding them post on Fchat in this section but I can't remember who it is off the top of my head.

It is not an interference fit so unless someone beat up the snout if the crankshaft it should just slide off.
Since it is now off I'd fix whatever prevents that.

I think there was probably just a bit of muck under there because once I got it moving it came off quite easily and has cleaned up fine. In the end my design was a bit of overkill, but I wanted to make sure of not deforming the balancer by equally distributing the load over more than half of the rim surface area.
