Hello community, hoping to get help via your collective wisdom:

I am restoring a 54/55 open sports racer (body by Scaglietti). We are looking for info on pedal treatment in period -specifically- what was the pedal top finish. I have heard opinions:
    1. bare metal
    2. some anti-slip coating
    3. rubber (thick) cover
    4. wood (Marine wood) riveted on top of the metal

Searching archive pictures of various cars, all 4 appear to be relevant.

Does anyone have a firm opinion on the matter?

    regards

    Elad

Scaglietti bodied the cars, they didn't make the running gear/chassis. Ferrari would have delivered the running/driving chassis to them with engine, gearbox and all of the controls (steering wheel, pedals, etc). The pedal treatment would have depended on what model the car was.
I would do research on your specific model of car and try to find period photos of the pedal treatment.

I have a very definite response to your question once you tell us what model you are working on.

Elad, I bought my 1955 50 Mondial Series II in June 1960. At that time it had very worn rubber pads with simple small horizontal ridges on both the brake and clutch pedals. 35 yers ago a sister car to mine surfaced and the attached photo shows the same pad on the brake pedal with the clutch side missing. I have seen other modifications such as the wired on wooden block obviously for a shorter person, and I have seen one with a couple of holes drilled on the pedal face to allow a wooden block to be screwed on. In 2007 David Carte located rubber pads exactly like the one in the photo which we installed on my car. Strongly suspect that the brake and clutch pedal size was selected to match then (and perhaps even now) readily available rubber pads from other cars. In my opinion you cannot go wrong by finding pads similar to the one in the photo.
    Regards,
    Robert

    Thank you Admiral. Very helpful.

Would the same conclusion be relevant for the gas pedal?

As my car is anything but a "tall drivers" cockpit, the wood seems superfluous. In fact -scarily- the seating position is such that the driver is sitting outside the cockpit waist up... and the pedals are super short to the seat.

it's a special body, but I still don't get what Scaglietti was trying to do...

    Here is a pick:

    thank you

Admiral, Those pedal covers look like standard 1950s 250GT pedal rubbers -framed narrow horizontal ribs for brake and clutch, broad vertical ribs for throttle.. See Cicognani Guarnizione listings for 250GT. The 250 brake/clutch curved metal pedal base is approximately 57 mm to 58 mm wide x 62 mm tall.
