Has anyone driven these vs. forged and have a feel for how much turn-in and handling generally is improved with them?
My last set went to RoadRonin and they look great on his Yellow paint. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/ferrari-296-gtb-picture-thread.644027/page-88
Here is the info found of Ferrari's website. It states that they are 40% lighter on all models. I will check the actual weight of each wheel and revert. 20" carbon fiber wheels
I read it as 40% lighter than standard wheels while forged save 7kg total from standard. So what’s the relative to the forged is my ? I guess. If the standard wheels weigh 55 kg, as a guess, do the carbons weigh 33 kg total, and forged weigh 48 kg?
I came up with: Front- 17 lbs each Rear- 18 lbs each Unbelievable. I knew they were light but these are on a different level… Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I dont know about specific things to watch out with changing tires on carbon wheels, I’d imagine its a similar worry about damaging the rim, except now, if you damage it, the risk of structural damage is much higher. In terms of weight if we go with @Jo Sta7 ’s numbers 4 Standard (cast?) Wheels = 55 kg = 121.25 lbs 4 Forged Wheels = 48kg = 105.82 lb // 7kg =15.43lbs lower = 13% lower * if unsprung mass is worth about 3x sprung mass (its been a while please excuse if I am wrong) this is worth about a 21kg=138.89lbs sprung mass weight savings… 4 Carbon Wheels = 31.75kg = 70.00 lb (actually a tiny bit below 70lbs, but rounding gets me to 70) // Improvement from Standard Wheels = 23.25kg =51.26lbs / Improvement from the Forged Wheels = 16.25k= 35.82lbs. * Vs the standard wheels, if unsprung mass is worth about 3x sprung mass (its been a while please excuse if I am wrong) this is worth about 69.75 kg= 153.77 lbs sprung mass weight savings… * Vs the forged wheels, if unsprung mass is worth about 3x sprung mass (its been a while please excuse if I am wrong) this is worth about 48.75 kg= 107.48 lbs sprung mass weight savings…. I dont know, but I think we can all agree that these are light. You just have to be sure to keep a keen eye on the wheels. They are not as easy to damage as you might think, but should damage occur, it needs to be attended to right away. To put the wheels in context, if my numbers are even close to correct, then, when they say you can buy a lightweight pack that cuts 30lbs out of the car, these wheels would get you about 3-4X that- just in the wheels- and its not just unsprung mass- its also rotational mass- so the part of the car that comes in contact with the road should be that much more reactive. In terms of feel, on my Pista, comparing to the forged Pista wheels, I have convinced myself this must be all psychological, but maybe it really isnt- the car’s chassis seems to “breathe” with the road a little better- just seems a touch more reactive. Feels “better” to me. I am also convinced the ride is a little nicer. One of my buddies who races and has the CF wheels on his SF90 says he can get wheel spin through 3rd gear, yet, I have the standard wheels on my SF90, and maybe I just can’t tell, but I dont think Im getting wheel spin, he says its like the car is so powerful and the wheels so light that its causing the over rotation. Looking at these numbers, I think it makes sense.
I have full carbon wheels on my Z06 and I love the look. These Ferrari ones are well over $20k more than the Z06 wheels though. That’s steep.
When carbon wheels are factory ordered on the Corvette they retune the suspension to reflect that lighter weight. I don't know that Ferrari changes their suspension tune with factory installed carbon wheels?
And they come out of the same factory , carbon revolution , they have a website with a bit of info on it
I don't know that because the wheels come out of the same factory they are the same. Ford created a "special" service GT program to take care of their CF etc not every Ford dealer can service their GT's - dealers to qualify bought special equipment / train to work on CF wheels. Bought an extra set of SF90 CF wheels and tempted here. Dealer is 16k each Take your Ferrari to Chevy dealer when it needs new tires vs Ferrari dealer - post pics of mechanic testing the car SF90 drops a few pounds in tire pressure - sends a do not drive cel - now keep a small air pump in car.
I had convinced myself that much of the difference in driving dynamics I’ve experienced since switching from the forged wheels to carbon fiber wheels was psychological. But these wheels do provide significant weight savings. The car feels more nimble, lively, and more eager to react to inputs. Yes, they are quite expensive … but worth it in my opinion. those are so dope. I wish I did not have a set of 21/22 on order. But I do want the staggered setup. GLWS
I usually find that owners try aftermarket wheels end up going back to OEM eventually. I guess that thats why I have 30 sets of OEM Ferrari Wheels...
