Ferarri’s were never driven extensively- high mileage. Of course there are exceptions, but the rule has been low mileage- an occasion car.

Today, it seems to be much worse. The cars have never been more reliable and yet when I look at those on the market, for the most part they are barely driven.

My most recent additions are incredibly entertaining to drive (812GTS and 296 GTB AF). The 296 is off the charts good and there are so many for sale- basically unused.

Customers want for more performance and Ferrari delivers; only to be collected as paperweights.

    Have Ferrari’s become trading sardines?

    It is sad.

I hope to rescue one soon and exercise it regularly.

They want to get out of the loan and limit $ loss. Move the sardines on before they start to smell. Sad.

Meh. Good for trying to preserve original paint.

My Boxer earned every little nose chip (and a few ahead of the rear wheels, and behind the front and rear wheelwells), up to the day it went for what eventually became a fairly comprehensive restoration to correct the 6 shades of "original factory paint" and a motor/driveline rebuild, with a new interior.
    It will get chips again.
Leather will get worn and shiny.
It will still look good, and it will look happy.... and so will I.

this car has a long history. and about 34k miles.
i just never got around to the ppf part, and then it was too late.
someday i will wrap it in a different color and cover up those chips.
but right now it wears them with pride and i drive the hell out of it - everywhere.

i have many cars, but its nice to have one that i dont have to worry about parking or driving on houston roads - which are 3rd world quality.

anyway, the op wanted to know why nobody drives their cars, and that is a mystery to me too - altho i can only imagine that the reason is that they cannot afford to diminish the value of their cars. so they get imprisoned in car jail.

    my 430 has 34k miles
    my 512bbi has 32k km
    my 512tr has 50k km
    my f40 has 20k km

i put about 50-70% of the mileage on all of these.
nobody lives for free in my garage.
what is the point of owning a high performance motor vehicle designed to be among the very best in the world, and then never drive it, or just putter around town to show off at cars and coffee?
    totally ****ing useless.
    buy a painting.

i dont sell anymore either, so the mileage issue is for my heirs to worry about.

I wouldn't call 34k miles 'driving the hell out of it' on a 15-20 year old car lol... jeesh it's just ANOTHER NEVER driven Ferrari. Not even 2k miles per year. But I agree it is kinda sad that we all do this to our ferraris...

I was one of the guys that started the Desert Region of the FCA. I spent 30 years making excuses for these guys. If I could get these guys to do anything other than look important at the valet...... the guy with the lowest miles always wins.

I drive all the cars. Track them, daily trips, vacations, work, Home Depot.

308, Mondial, Mondial t cab, TR, CS, F40. I don't regret a single mile. They made irreplaceable memories. How many people have flown to a little town in MI, bought a TR and drove to AZ (hitting 175 in an unnamed state in the middle of the night). Or picked up an F40 in Orange County, CA and made it to central Phoenix in 3 hours/20 mins. And the list goes on.

You will have no great stories with these cars unless you drive them. When you are on your death bed just remember that instead of enjoying your Ferrari, you saved it for the next guy (or your kids) to beat the hell out of it. Think about that for a minute...

you are right, this is not a super high mileage. but this is ferrari world - which is not ford world.
and, as i have said before, the best way to not put too much mileage on your ferrari, is to have a lot of ferraris :)
and i am not counting the ferraris that i no longer own that i drove as dailies or tracked or taken on the mille, or the giro, or the targa etc.
between our various places, we have about 25 cars. some of them more interesting than others (e63s renntech wagon is a very special one imo :) ).
they all get driven as much and as appropriately as possible, but i also travel about 4-6 months per year.
so overall i probably drive 10-12k miles per year, spread over many cars and not that many months.

THIS is what i am talking about !
    make the memories !
that roadtrip with your dad/son/wife etc in the ferrari will warm your heart deep into dotage :)

i bought my 512tr in rome on a wednesday, my dad flew in the next day, and we drove it to london on the weekend. i have the fitted luggage, and that car has been across 8 countries.
i bought my 512bbi, had it checked out mechanically over a couple weeks and then drove it on the targa florio. and that car has been across 8 countries.
i bought the f40 in austria, had it sent to bob houghton for a service and british plates, and then picked it up and drove it to geneva in one day (could not walk the next day but what the hell ;) ) then i drove it back to silverstone for the 25th anniversary gathering. i have the fitted luggage and that car has been across 6 countries.
i bought the CS on a wednesday, changed the oil, pads, and tires, and took it to mugello that weekend ! then drove it in the mille tribute, tracked it for 2 seasons, and toured with it in many other places.
i bought the 456mgt and drove it as a daily for 6 years, have the fitted luggage and done many trips all over europe.
the only ferrari that did not get used that much was the first one - the 348ts - and that is because it rarely worked ! :) it was cursed by the devil and sold on.

    etc etc
life is to be lived !

My 91 TR was a low km barely running, dusty basket case found in a Dubai hotel car park when I bought it in 2008, a step away from becoming a parts car. It took 18 months of weekends to fix it, but it has taught me a lot of mechanical skills over the years. It is still not cosmetically perfect, but it looks pretty good and all the mechanical stuff is in great shape.

I could not care less what the odometer says (now 70,000+km). The more I use it, the better it runs. I just shipped it from Dubai to my home in Bologna where I intend to use it to travel around Italy and the Alps with my wife and my pug. No matter what the odo says, it will always be worth more than the $20k it cost, but I do not really care. I have a few older F and L-cars, after my 87 Mondial Cabrio the TR is worth the least but would probably be the last one I sell.

While not every example is cost effective, my suggestion is to car in need of some attention, bring it back to mechanical health and use it. You will never worry about the effect of mileage on value.

About 6 months after I got my 550 many years ago, I sent a note to the general manager of the Ferrari dealership where purchased the car. The note was titled: Ferrari 550 = Mini-van." I told him that among my weekend fun drives, I was also using the 550 to take my son to soccer practice, grocery shopping with my daughter, to go to my son''s high school varsity baseball games, to pick up some supplies at the woodworking shop, to go out for pizza with my wife, to the farm stand after Sunday church, etc. In short, it sure sounds like a mini-van to me.

I drive mine everywhere and even have had a 2X4 or two sticking out of the passenger window of a few on the occasional quick run to Home Depot in the easiest car to access at that moment.

I don’t think I’d tie a mattress to the roof of any of the exotics, but I use them.
