Don’t forget the 5% duty, so adds up to 48% then you can try and register it, Australia is a bit unfriendly for older cars and want to strip cars to find any asbestos in the car, apparently.

"Completed by the factory on 26 October 1990 and built to U.S. ‘cat, adjust’ specifications with catalytic converters and adjustable suspension"

    ?????

This is also probably the first auction listing I've ever seen reference a FerrariChat post directly!

Some past history on the car:

Based on RM's estimate, they must feel there's not much of an impact on value.

Though, I think the overall market feels differently... Guess we'll see.

Why would you buy a story car? The answer is because it is cheap enough. Otherwise there are always plenty available that have no stories.

RM had a private sale F40 last year that had accident history without a “total loss” write off title and still had a hell of a time selling it. The car sat for months and finally sold for less the guidance for this one.

There are over 1,300 of these cars. It’s not rare. It’s not a 60 year old car with only a couple dozen or less produced where you may not get another chance at one. Paying 90% of the price of a good F40 for a car with salvage total loss history would be completely idiotic. Try half that and it’s a beginning to be rational.

agreed, there are tons of f40's for sale at all times in great condition so it's madness unless significantly cheaper

I’d buy a salvage title F40 and have some fun, change to LM spec, that sort of thing, but of course it would have to be cheap enough!

Speaking of madness: Specialty has (re)listed an F40 they had for sale in 2023 - https://www.specialtycarcollection.com/vehicle-details/1990-ferrari-f40-coupe-34354094182746c5a8fcf2c4eb42d239

Prior to the sale in late 2023, it was a one-owner car, which is increasingly rare. Unfortunately, the front clamshell had been replaced "due to a parking lot incident", though there was no supporting evidence or documentation, which severely limited the buyer pool as evidenced by spending a year on market and ultimately selling for the appropriate discount. Now it seems they're targeting a "full" retail price (and then some), presumably hoping the market forgets / doesn't know / doesn't care. There are better cars for less money, both on and off market, which I'm sure any serious F40 buyer will be aware of.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to find clean US cars, I've been looking for over a year.

The car was also previously for sale for an extended time, prior to being auctioned by Mecum in 2022 and achieving $2.31 including fees.

I am curious as to why RM would put such a high estimate on it considering the history.

Booze, being on TV, and uninformed bidders is Mecums keys to price results. RM had better start serving liquor today if they want bidders to be sufficiently lubricated to pay over $2.3m for this car in a few months.
