lots of great info, still contemplating my direction. if I get a replacement, at a minimum, I would do a major service. my budget for that would be between 16 and 20k for the motor and parts and secondary labor. (ie: machine work) sound about right?
but if I dive into the existing motor, providing I can determine that the main components are sound (crank, block, heads, cams etc.) i would assume (big leap?) that i could take <20k and have a sweet motor?

I bought a 6000 mile motor from Bruce Wright a few years ago for $9500. It was in perfect condition. Did not have intake, throttle bodies or manifolds. I sold it but gives you an idea of pricing.

wow! that was a sweet deal. how many of those exist? it seems that a good number of 355's get wrecked, so there seem to be engines available. its just finding that car/engine/owner that performed proper maintenance prior to the crash.

I agree, unless the car is mostly pristine otherwise (needs mostly nothing elsewhere).

This is a very good question that no one seems to be able to answer. Ferrari use very high quality parts and their metallurgy is world class. They have their own foundry! I suspect that it is a combination of two things. Odds are your Ferrari is your dream car; your baby so most owners are highly, perhaps overly pro-active addressing issues. While other can't afford to do hardly any maintenance at all. The second being the aforementioned lack of regular driving. There is likely a 3rd and fourth reason too. Could make for an interesting discussion..

Would it be more cost-effective and reliable to rebuild the original motor with a head rebuild and potential bottom-end inspection, or should I install the sourced engine with 40k miles and plan for a 25k investment to fully refurbish it for long-term driving?

@BrianBee1977 Forgot about that post from 2019, and the car as well...... lol......

I ended up buying a different car that had lower miles, an incredible service history,
and very recent full engine out service from one of the best independents. It was
pure luck that I stumbled upon this one, and I think the extensive "spare no expense"
maintenance from the 2 previous owners served me very well.
