Just noticed that one of the LEDs in my third brake light in my rear deck is out. I haven't removed it to inspect the feasibility of a repair but was wondering in advance if anyone has any thoughts on replacing the burned out LED(?)

    Thanks, Ken

Not this device in particular, but LEDs don't usually burn out with normal use... more often it is a bad solder joint on the circuit board

I have removed the third light and disassembled. It does not have LED’s.but small soldered in place incandescent bulbs. Don’t know where you can find them. I replaced them with high intensity white LED’s. You have to either have one current limiting resister for the whole fixture or add one for each LED.

Great. Thanks for the heads up. Never would have expected to open that light up and see incandescent bulbs in a 2003 model ( insert any car here) ;)
I can understand incandescent tail light bulbs that are easily replaced, but this as a unit, I am surprised.

Is the replacement one from Superformance LED or also with incandescent bulbs? Thanks a lot :)

It's LED. Very bright compared to stock.

I contacted SuperPerformance to confirm that their replacement part was LED based and not with tungsten bulbs, but they sent me a very tepid reply stating that the light was "according to Ferrari stock specs". I didn't have the faintest clue what they meant and some more instance for clarification for me no further reply. I'm too old and already lavishly out of patience to do business with people depleted of the art of proper communication.. even because those deals always go south. So, I just went ahead and bought the Scud Ing part. Yes, I agree that its a stupid amount of money but hey, fits perfectly, no F1 errors, one continuing (non-dotted) light strip and I couldn't be happier. As long as it lasts, I'm game thinking it was a good deal. I had fitted my car with the Morimoto LED back lights and the stock 3rd break light just didn't match. That along with a HID/Halogen to Bi-LEDs on the front headlights, and the while thing really does give the car a more modern look without messing up in any way with the car's original style. Surely I keep the complete set of old lights and casings in case I want to revert everything to stock later on.

PS - Headlights conversion required opening them (they were totally foggy inside anyway and it had to be done). Did everything myself.. not for the faint of heart nor anyone suffering from chronic stress.

Just FYI, I bought a brand new third brake light from Ricambi and it was an updated LED unit in a Ferrari box. So at some point, they updated to LED. I, too, had a couple out cubes in my original one.

Problem is that now it doesn't work at all. Not sure if I messed up a ground or something during the install or if I have a bad one out of the box. In an attempt to fix, I replaced all new OEM contact points, striker, even the plugs going into them. Nothing.

I assumed this was the ground for the 3rd brake light, but looking at the wiring diagrams, it seems to be power...

Do you have 12 volts power at 15L with your foot on the brake?
