How To Get That F1 Sound

Nope, factory cats. Sport cats would simply be too much.

I believe it's a Euro car and the factory manifolds and cats are still on it from what i was told. Although, it seems a bit too rowdy to have factory cats still in place. Take that info with a grain of salt. Doesn't sound too bad honestly. I'm looking pretty close at the whole setup here for my own car fairly soon.

Here’s a Scud with Full Kline Inconel. Says he has cats, but not sure if 200 or 100 cell.


My setup with Capristo headers + 100 cell Kline Inconel (or straight pipes) + Kline Inconel muffler sounds better imo. Cleaner and more F1 pitch from start to finish.



The Kline headers appears to kill the F1 pitch from low rpms and only begins to have some semblance of F1 pitch at higher rpms. Sounds more grunty down low and not quite the full F1 pitch when it finally gets to the higher rpms.


My setup takes this setup with ease.



* Side note. There was only maybe a 10-15% sound difference between Kline 100 cell Inconel cats and straight pipes.

 

Some combinations just seem to pair up better.


For example… perhaps Kline manifolds + S-Line is super fantastic, but Kline manifolds + Kline muffler will not quite get you there. Then you have different cats to throw into the mix.



I’ve always been curious about the Pogea Racing muffler for the Scud. Appears to be a potentially louder Kline. Or even Valvetronic Designs. Smaller muffler box.

 

any vids of your setup? He has 100 cell cats I believe. The only diff between the two setups would be your headers which are steel and 4-2-1 headers vs his inconel 4-1 headers.

 

The difference in headers would make all the difference imo.

No vids unfortunately, but I can tell you it’s different enough.


My car is also running straight pipes now instead of 100 cell. Almost same sound as 100 cell. Probably only a 10-15% volume improvement.

Capristo headers are basically a louder more open OE header imo. I ran Capristo headers with OE cats + OE muffler for 1000 miles or two and it just sounded like a louder Scud with more balls.


Here’s a vid of Valvetronic muffler , straight pipes, and OE headers. You can already hear the F1 pitch from start to finish. I actually think this muffler box is better than Kline’s after listening to it a few times. Sounds louder and a bit more wild. More to my liking. I’ve always said Kline sounds great… just not loud enough. A capristo header added here would only make it louder without changing the pitch type you hear.

 

Cap headers, cap 200 cats, kline muffler on my 430 sounds pretty insane.

that’s what’s surprising to me is the 4-2-1 header layout providing the higher pitch than the 4-1 layout of the Kline. From a sound perspective, I was under the impression than 4-1 headers typically provide a higher pitched sound than 4-2-1.

I recently added Kline 4-1 headers to my scud that already had Kline 200 cell cats and s-line xpipe (non valved). The 4-1 headers changed the pitch of the exhaust as soon as you get onto the throttle from idle compared to the stock headers. The stock headers (4-2-1) had more of a “boomy” sound off idle whereas the Kline headers added this higher pitched “whirl” off idle.

 

There are different types of 4-1 headers. AP isn’t the same as Kline. Kline isn’t the same as Powercraft. The variances give different results.

However, my comment was more towards the synergistic result of a particular combo. If you feel it worked better with S-Line, that’s great. There have also been people in the past who felt Capristo headers + S-Line was also great.


The results of Kline’s 4-1 header + Kline muffler are in that video. To my ears it sounds grunty like a standard Scud at lower rpms, then suddenly changes to F1 pitch last min at the higher rpms. I’m not hearing a smooth, clean, defining F1 sound from start to finish. The F1 sound build up just isn’t there like other samples.



On a side note, I would say there’s no boom at all with Capristo + Kline combo.


Fwiw, most 4-1 headers on a 355 have killed a good percentage of F1 pitch on a 355, so it is possible.

 

Here’s another example of full Kline Inconel. Not sure if he’s running 200 or 100 cell, but results are similar to my ears to the yellow Scud.


Does this not sound like a louder standard Scud at the lower rpms?

 

I guess sound is so subjective. For my ears, all of these exhaust videos that use a X pipe setup don’t get into the high pitch sound until 6k rpm. For me, the “high pitch” sound has its own spectrum that ranges from more of a throaty high pitch sound at one end, clean high pitch sound at another end, and a more raspy high pitch sound in the middle. Where you end up in that spectrum is dependent on the particular combo.

 

I’m not so much referring to high pitch F1 sound at lower RPMs, but there is a subtle F1 howl you can hear that is distinguishable from a stock exhaust. That howl simply picks up in volume and starts screaming at upper RPMs.


It’s the subtle F1 howl and build up I am referring to.


Here’s a Fabspeed, straight pipe, Kline F430. You can hear the subtle F1 howl at lower rpms. I guess those who have the same setup with Kline headers need to ask themselves if that subtle howl is there at low rpms.





Here’s another F430. Not sure his setup, but it might just be stock with a Kline muffler.






The F430 with AP headers + Kriessieg muffler I drove was F1 howl from start to finish. Even more so than my setup.

Of course a valved x pipe isn’t going to start screaming at low RPMs, but it needs to have the subtle F1 howl to build into the F1 scream.

 

Here’s an example of a Brilliant X-pipe muffler from Japan. Description only mentions muffler (not full exhaust), so I’m going to assume the car is still running stock headers and possibly stock cats.

We are on the same page....what you are referring to is what I've described as more of a "hollow" sound that builds into the F1 pitch whereas some other exhaust setups have more of a bassy note that leads into the higher f1 pitch. I'll be heading to Laguna with my Scud in July and will have my Go Pro mounted. I should have some good footage from the event to contribute.

People need to make a choice. Do you want the lower rpm F1 howls that are a better match to the F1 scream for a smoother and cleaner transition or do you want some bassy low rpms sounds that suddenly turn into an F1 pitch … and I’m not sure if it’s even a full F1 pitch.

 

The F1 howls are either there or it isn’t. You don’t exactly need fancy equipment to capture it.

 

458 has more rpms and sounds higher than the 430 with the same setup, it's like comparing pears with apples

 

Only my Scud sounds similar. Just not as loud or as sharp.


Go back to the Brilliant exhaust vid (Scud) @6:40 for reference.

 

A 458 with the right exhaust setup, such as a Brilliant Exhaust has a very clean, loud, and piercing F1 note at the higher RPMs. An F430/Scud will probably never get that same note.

However, at the lower normal driving RPMs, you can get pretty damn close to 458.

At higher RPMs, you can probably match the volume with something like a Kriessieg, Valvetronic Design, Brilliant… when considering valved mufflers, but they won’t be as clean or piercing as the 458. They’ll be a bit more wild with a ruckus nature. Kline is clean and close, just not as loud or as sharp as a 458 with a proper setup.

S-line (non valved) can also match the volume, perhaps even exceed the 458, but it’s more on the wild side. More of a brawler. Less clean F1 pitch. Preference at that point.



If you want close to 458 sound with a valved X-pipe muffler:

1. 100 cell or straight pipes.
2. Stick with a 4-2-1 header like Capristo, Larini, or Tubi. Capristo and Larini claim added power. Tubi doesn’t.
3. Try a longer length style 4-1 manifold like Fabspeed, Topspeed, Agency Power, or Powercraft.


Problem with the longer length 4-1’s is people don’t want to experience a dip in power at the lower rpms.


That’s why I chose Capristo manifolds, which were pretty much the same price as Kline Inconel 4-1 manifolds. No dip in power anywhere. If anything there was a gain at the low and mid range. Maintains F1 pitch… just increases its volume. Other manifolds can alter the sound to something else, whether it be more positively or negatively because it strays too far from OE design. It’s hit or miss and combo sensitive.


Anyone can search back and you won’t find a single negative review on Capristo headers other than being too pricey.


Marco just got his full Kline setup, so naturally he’s excited about it. Maybe he’s sponsored by Kline… who knows??? I’ve been at this for damn near a decade with more than 5k miles on Kline Inconel. If anything, Richard and I put Kline on the map. I love me some Kline as well.


I’d rather speak from objectivity listings pros and cons of individual items than full-on brand support. I’ve mentioned on several occasions what I think could be better than Kline Inconel.


For a valved X-pipe muffler design, Kriessieg sounds better than Kline for sure. However, I would still choose Kline for Inconel weight savings and patina. If you don’t care about Inconel, get a Kriessieg. Heck, even Brilliant exhaust sounds great.


For weight reduction and sound, Valvetronic Designs might actually be better than Kline Inconel. Just avoid their short style 4-1 headers.
