That’s interesting. I did not know they flight tested the X-31 after removing the vertical tail and rudder. Too bad the F-22 did not have yaw vectoring to reduce the size of its huge control surfaces. I did a NASA wind tunnel test in the 90s on a F-15 that showed removing the tails could reduce drag by almost 16%. It’s fine as long as the engine is running so maybe they cannot be totally removed but downsized, at least…someday. So I was over by my local aircraft museum and I spotted this rather cool aircraft that arrived last year. Is that a Douglas Skynight?? I could find no one at the museum. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
That aircraft on its side in front of the A4 is an F3D Skynight. Not sure where it came from yet. I show 9 remaining, so this one came from another museum, maybe in New York? One was removed from the Intrepid display in 2012, so this could be the same aircraft. I hope they paint it dark blue, as delivered. Terry, what I do remember is being awakened near midnight on 1 July 1965 in a tent with the Marine Helicopter Squadron on the southwest corner of the DaNang airfield when the VC attacked the C-130 flare ships and the F-102s just across the runway from us. This is an online photo of the F-102 remnants, the C-130s were burned to the ground. Some memories just do not fade away. Best regards, Robert Image Unavailable, Please Login
Admiral- I missed that one. Did not see combat until Desert Storm. I was in nav and EWO school as the war wound down in SEA. The F-102s actually proved to be not too effective over there. Especially the ones in the photo.
As I recall the F-104s were all kept at the North end of the base, none were hit. The attached photo is the remnant of one of the C-130s. Image Unavailable, Please Login
