Why not just repair the original harness. I’ve never had a car with a need for a new harness? Connectors, spare wires, sleeves, rubber boots, crimps etc are all readyli available - is the consensus not to keep as much original parts in the car as possible? Maybe I’m getting old? I’m precautionary protecting contacts and fuse boxes against high current equipment like head lights by relays and have never had any issues with my 46 years old renovated harness.

    best, Peter

Got the page and have emailed them
    https://www.riwire.com/
Thanks for the steer , I contacted both suppliers, they don’t stock the “spiral trace” I’m specifically after ,, but do sell wires that are not the peculiar shades that a distinctive to Ferrari of the 70’s ,,but are close . I’m trying to get as close to an OEM authentic look… as well as replacing the wires that are brittle and the ones in which the copper conductors have suffered heavily from oxidation , primarily at the fusebox and the exposed engine compartment circuits . I’m aware the 6.3mm Lucas style terminal's are all available and I can reuse the insulators .

    Hi Peter,
Thanks for the reply, I’m still on the hunt for the spiral trace wire, it’s not available from the most popular Loom builders / Automotive wire suppliers in the UK … Autosparks are allegedly the premium builder and they quote over 3k for a loom … with NO spiral trace wire ( they don’t stock it ) and will only “try “ to match the particular shades of the primary colours !!!! I’ve still got some specialist wire and cable suppliers coming back to me… MOQ’s might be a stumbling block , but I’m confident in the building of a loom … once it’s removed and laid up in the BIG bench I’ll be in a much better position to assess the condition and the deterioration over 53years …Whilst copper does have a relatively long life span … depending on environment and exposure to the elements affect it’s conductivity and poor sliding contacts in the open multi plugs has caused the wires to overheat and a combination of these factors has caused headlamp failure, window motors slow ( high resistance in the wires .. ( the door looms are u/s I’ve renewed them ) also the pvc is brittle on the ALL the wires to the fuse box, various adhoc repairs has led to a unreliable electrical system.. not just a replace for the sake of it … Thers nothing worse than ignoring the fundamental electrical system on car and having frustrating breakdowns , circuits not functioning correctly due the above issues and the potential of at worst case an electrical fire . ! Going to look at the loom in detail. Then make a call on the practical repairs - and the main aim to restore to full electrical function. .

    Best Regards

    Derrick

I hate to burst anybody' dream, but I spoke at length with Autosparks, and would prefer to roll my own after our' conversation' and various differences of opinion.

I understand your worries if the pvc isolation have given up and are starting to disintegrate on all the wires. That I have only experienced on a few single wires and I have then replaced the particular wire with new or cut the bad part out and replaced. I always remove ALL the connectors, inspect and clean every wire, pull on new PVC sleeves, cut +- 1 cm of each wire, remove ALL oxidation with a chemical solder fluid (Acid + flux, I dip the copper end into the fluid and neutralize afterwards), crimp on new connectors and then SOLDER every connection and lastly adding a short length of heat shrink tubing across the connector to the wire to give further mechanical support. I know the consensus is against soldering the connectors due to risk of later breaking tendencies but I've done this for decades and have never experienced that to be a real problem. It's all a compromise using different methods and newer materials than was available 40+ years ago, but I'm left with a well functioning harness with NO loose connections and no local overheating issues. The method is very labor intensive, but for me it's a hobby.

I have had issues with their quality of loom finish before , glue on the external cloth braid , general poor quality of finish of breakouts ! ,, like all loom build it’s who’s on the bench build that day and a their commitment to the quality of workmanship. I have a lot of experience in this line of work .

No not really bad Tony, but one day it was one thing, the next another, tentative (very) schedule, Chelsea and Debbie, were very nice,
but there was a lot of feet shuffling in-between.

Plug and play? Reply: That depends. I kind of like a 100% replay, or a definite yes or no, no possiblies or maybes....:)

Not for me. Possibly, if you live there, much more feasible.

I did make a couple of harnesses for me. But now I have a guy in Calif who makes them for me. I just send the old harness and he copies it. Very high quality. He does the fuseboard also.
