This is really making me paranoid about the little sounds I am hearing! Could this be the sound of oil pump bearing? The video is very short, had to crop it for file size limit, but a low volume high frequency whine can be heard at 2500rpm, goes away abruptly at 1500rpm. This noise happens randomly, on/off throttle, in\out of gear, and with AC on and off.
Before I bought my car, I had a PPI done on my 2001 550 by Competizione & Sports Car, they found nothing wrong, but then again they left the air filter covers screws loose. Didn't give me much faith in their PPI. After I bought the car I had Ferrari of Bedford do a PPI on my car, before he moved south. Dave said the car was in good shape except for a loose cam belt idler bearing and it should be dealt with when I did the belts, but it wasn't anything to worry about. I decided to do a belt change and sent the car to BraDan on Long Island. While doing the belt change, they found the same bearing bad that Clyde keeps finding. Dan said if I hadn't had the service done before the bearing totally failed, I would have trashed my engine. My car had about 26K miles on it at the time. After this, I have no faith in PPI's.
If you are a washer or a waxer this post reply isn't for you go back to your online porn site now and save yourself some embarrassment and you know who you are! unfortunately, the majority of Ferrari owners want the flash but don't want to pay the cash if you look at the FCA crowd they cherish the clean car but not the high mileage one you can't fix that. going back to inspections before buying a car most techs don't have the breath nor the depth to really know what going on with 12-cylinder cars that's the long and the short of it attached is my FAA Certificate stating that I have been a mechanic for over 50years along with my master aviator award as well (50 years of flying) I have worked on aircraft where you actually have to put you name on a piece of a paper certifying its right or people might die! I have owned 12-cylinder cars for over 35 years not bragging it just is what it is I put over 100k on my 93 512 TR before I sold it 3 years ago (see attached photo) I bought in in 1997 with 10K on it biggest write up DEAD BATTERY! guess who owned it ? A Doctor imagine that everyone wants a low mileage Ferrari that's 25 years old here are the facts the vehicle that has been used often and not washed and waxed to death will last the test of time I used to do PDI for people on 12 Cylinder cars but no longer those people don't want to hear the truth about the car it's like the same crowd on Bring a Trailer if you say something bad they kick you off the site let them eat CAKE! bottom line find the 12-cylinder car you want and carve off $35K off the price of the car and go through it front to back we call that zero timing the aircraft you would not step into an aircraft that has not been flown yet the Ferrari clowns who have the deepest pockets will spend an absorbent amount of money buying a vehicle that has not been driven! go figure! we have a saying in our business Aviation is self-cleansing meaning you either know what you are doing, or you are going to die and possibly take other with you Same goes with Ferrari ownership as far as I am concerned except you will just be taking your wallet with you down that path Here's one more item just case there is a 458/488 guy out there reading this post (I feel sorry for you) there is a substantial amount of these cars that are showing rod end bearing issues inside of 10k miles talk about expensive! no one runs SOAP samples anymore, and if you don't know what that is I can't help you we don't have enough time here to cover why but those of us who know know why me if one showed up in my driveway free I would drive to ghetto and leave the keys in it! Got to Go Clyde Romero PS I will be posting my repair pictures for those who want to see them Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Clyde, there cannot be many other people that were able to experience as much pleasure from A testarossa as you have. I will add that over time I have enjoyed the contributions of his high mileage ownership since new of his 550 (>125k mi) over on BaT with fchat handle @Montgomery Kersten please keep it coming, love the thread.
ok I have zip file of the damage done to the parts on the recent engine it had 27k when the bearing failed and cause all of this like I said if you have a 456/550.575/612 you will have this issue I would address it sooner rather than later it's too big for this forum if you want to see it email me at [email protected] I will send it to you not trying to be ugly here but this isn't novice stuff so, if you don't know what you're looking at that's fine just don't; expect me to walk you through this this isn't shop class 101
I saw that picture and it didn't make sense to me, whence my post explaining that wasn't the bearing that Hill Engineering have an upgrade for... Pay attention, dude.
I think its PN 171177 in question. The 575 uses two of these ball bearings. The part itself is a rather ubiquitous part used on several early Luca era cars. My understanding is that is not usually changed with a belt service. I was not aware of any additional scheduled replacement for PN 171177 as it does not appear part of the usual major kits sold for 550/575/456. Having just completed majors on both my 575 (2023) and 456 (2024), I have no notes about it ever being replaced or again it having a service/replacement schedule. The Hill Engineering part in question replaces PN 171057 or 170787 and is different. I do not know if HE makes a replacement for 171177; someone should reach out to Paul and ask if he does. Seems like its sorely needed
Hell's bells......next year I'm ready for another 550 belt service so I'm grateful here for the sharing as I'm not the kind of guy to be bashful about spending on "preventatives" and if we get this nailed down then I'll have it done as well at the same time. p.s my mechanic called shortly ago and I'm actually going to finally pick up the car tomorrow (forget waiting till saturday)!
my last major was done by Bradan in LI, I checked the invoice, he did replace 171177 as well as the HE replacements: PT550 and 170787
Based on the experience of Clyde and several others, I am glad he did! I am surprised 171177 are not included in your usual major kit (to be fair I haven’t sat down and read through the WSM to see what it says) Come my next majors I will have the pair replaced as well on my both my 575/456m. Hopefully no major issues until then but I guess we’ll find out….
I replaced both 171177 on my 550 at about 60k miles but the old ones felt about as fresh as the new ones, FWIW. The bearings in the front cover however had been sweating grease for quite some time.
A CEL is a early indication of the timing going off on these 550/575 possibly leading to the failure I have experienced
also, you might want to check the wear on the drive shaft gears I am replacing mine and there is a drift pin that needs to be replaced as well I was lucky in one sense of the word I only needed one head done my old black 2003 575 it destroyed both heads if you get nonsense CEL this in my opinion is a n early indication of the timing slipping which directly leads to this type of failure that I have experienced a rough idle as well these were all the symptoms I had prior to the failure
Hill Engineering make a better front bearing (170787), but do not make a better rear bearing (171177). That makes two of each, not four.
