My Capristo sound 1 is louder than my sound 3, why?

Can you measure the dB at idle from 1 meter behind the exhaust tip with an app like dB meter or decibelX?

 

Does the spider have an exhaust fully open at all times and the GTS has closed valves at idle/low RPM?

 

Are you sure the bypass valve is closing? Installation issue? Loss of vacuum?

Capristo Sound 3 and Sound 1 have the same sound level when bypass is closed. Both are their quietest versions (bypass closed).

The difference should be when the bypass opens. The Sound 1 is probably quieter than the Sound 3. Most prefer loud when bypass opens.

 

Your 2.7 95 car is quieter simply because Capristos are quieter on 2.7 setups when bypass closed. It will scream louder than your 5.2 when bypass opens.

 

It's exactly the other way arround. An Capristo 1-3 eyhaust has with a closed valve sound level 1 (a bit louder then stock) and level 3 (loud) when fully open. The capristo level 3 has from closed to open valve the same loud sound.

I supposed there’s no need to buy a valve controller then. Lol.

 

Capristo bypass’ supposedly fails open, so there’s that. Get that sorted and get back to us. However, I doubt that’s the issue.

A straight muffler swap requires no need to mess with the bypass valve aside from attaching the muffler to it. In short, if you had a bypass valve issue, it was most likely there before you took it to the shop, therefore, no changes.


Are they the ones who sold you on the Capristo 1? Or is this simply a muffler you purchased on your own and had them install?

 

If they “sold” you on this muffler, they have no choice but to tell you it is alot quieter (bypass closed) because they would look foolish if they didn’t selling you a muffler that did not meet your objectives.


Most sellers are confused between the differences. Your experience confirms what I’ve known to be the true differences.


It’ll be fun to watch them try to figure it out though .



On a side note, you mentioned Capristo bypass valve on your 5.2, but not on your 2.7?

Capristo bypass fails open by design (natural state is open). On start up, it is open, so it’s louder than a stock valve as you turn the key. Then the valve then begins to close and quiets down. If it doesn’t close, then something is wrong, but it should be very noticeably loud… not somewhat loud.

 

I have Tubi headers and Capristo Sound 2 on my car.

During my engine out service this year I had them install the Capristo bypass valve. When I picked my car up it was completely silent and the valve never opened. I called them to tell them the issue and their first thought was the solenoid was bad. When I brought the car back in they quickly realized the Capristo bypass switches the vacuum lines from OEM. They made the switch of the lines and it works perfectly again.
