So i need to remove the alternator to either rebuild or replace on the 328. My AC system is already removed but the replacement alternators I see vendors selling online do not have long enough screws to allow you to remount the rear cast aluminum cover where the cooling vent hose would go.

also having the rear aluminum cover off the alternator makes R&R so much easier for servicing as the physical case is much shorter and I am leaning towards doing it this way and keeping it like that.

I wanted to ask any if you guys who have replaced your original alternator if you installed yours without the rear cast aluminum cap or not. Almost all of these cars are missing that flex hose today and I do not think it really does much considering how we are sparingly using our cars these days.

The cover and hose are a Ferrari part, probably why it's not part of a replacement alternator.
Ferrari added those bits for a reason, the alternator gets cooked under the manifold, the impeller fan should be pulling in fresh cold air from under chassis to feed the diode bridge and regulator and windings as it pulls thru.
Question is, how much I suppose.. well Ferrari wouldn't go to the cost and expense of updating that part if it didn't work.

So my long winded vote is to retain that feature.

Early models used a stand off heat shield plate, kinda effective, better then nothing.

The 328 alternator is just a standard Bosch unit internally so easy (and cheap) to service/recondition - just don't tell anyone its off a Ferrari! You just need someone who can refurb Bosch components.

Manufacturers are not in the business of installing expensive hidden parts that are not needed.
    Leave it on.
BTW you say most no longer have the hose. I work on them every day and have never seen one without the hose but then I dont work on junk cars.
You dont suppose you could post your VIN for us?

Making a good hamburger is easy too but I cannot seem to find a good one of those either.

Would that cover and hose be something that could retrofit to a 308?

Seems like it would be a worthwhile upgrade if so.

I believe so, the hose is simply held with a larger clamp off the gear case for the other end, nothing fancy there. The trick would be getting that cover part, no idea on how difficult that is honestly.

FYI - for the hose, I used a 1 foot section of SCEET-7 hose from Aircraft Spruce. $17 shipped. As far as I know, the rear cover is stock on my ‘84 GTS QV.
