    We have the technology, and may even have something like this, to build a nuclear powered underwater drone that can go on and on for a long...long...time. It can scower the seafloor with sidescan sonar and map and investigate anomalies, surface periodically to transmit data via satellite, and keep on going mapping by grid.

    If something like that existed, finding anything we wanted under water is in reach, it would take time, but it would be on the job 24-7.

    It would likely be military, due to the nuclear power plant... I'm sure the Navy would be happy to have accurate underwater mapping for sub operations.

    But, the southern Indian Ocean isn't of much interest, except in this case.
