My carbs are currently at Weber Restoration getting rebuilt. When I got my car the air filter boxes and oil catch can had been painted a semi-gloss black. Over the years they have gotten a little ratty so I'd like to get them power coated. I believe these items were originally had a crinkle finish. I am not a fan of the crinkle finish because it attracts and holds dirt and dust, in my opinion that finish always looks dirty. I'm thinking of going with a semi-gloss black powder coat. Just curious what everyone's opinion is on doing this finish.

My engine used to be black gloss, I liked it a lot actually. My mechanic did disagree so on the last rebuild, he got some VHT wrinckle paint and reverted to the original look.

To tell the truth this kind of wrinckle paint is not as easy to clean as the original wrinckle finish or the glossy black I had.

On the plus side it looks nice and is easy to patch if need be. By contrast my glossy finish had a few nicks during the rebuild and on such finish it was hard to properly patch.

On my 78 the air filter boxes which are original do not have black wrinkle paint. Only the engine valve covers and some other parts have the distinctive wrinkle finish.

Elected to go with a semi-gloss black. I told the shop I was going out of town for a bit. They said they would be complete with the project on 23 June. That should align with when I get the carbs back.

    Good day Jim,

When I looked into the carb box finish a while ago, I found that some cars had wrinkle finished boxes and others were non-wrinkle/satin... clearly, there was not real consistency from the factory. Consequently, it is one of the rare items that you can do whatever you like.

    Cheers,

    Sam

Powder coat wrinkle is much more durable and cleans far better.

People using spray paint get too much wrinkle. It never looks good, traps dirt and discolors from exposure to chemicals, cleaning materials etc.
