Wasn't the Peugeot designed specifically for LM as well?

Possibly but they don't have the same competence.

The Peugeot was designed around a different set of rules, where the AWD was available at lower speeds, hence the bigger front wheels. Then ACO had to make room for the garbage that came from IMSA and their main advantage was eliminated. So yes, Peugeot lacks competence, but they also started with an arm tied behind their backs.

Sensibly, the ACO invited LMDh cars in the WEC: they will provide more than half the participants in Hypercars !! (12 to 9)
In LMH, only 2 constructors have any chance: Ferrari and Toyota.
Technically challenged, Peugeot and Aston Martin are just there for the ride.
Even if they don't win, the LMDhs ("the IMSA garbage") will be the main opposition and provide most of the show.

Quantity doesn´t make anything less garbage. Quite often is the opposite, as the simplest, cheapest option is the most common.

Yes, that is pretty much what happened the first year the 499Ps were in WEC. They were hit to close the gap to the other teams yet Toyota got off very lightly specially given they were the front runner. I do believe the 499Ps and team are hitting their peak this year.

Yesterday and today Le pesage takes place, downtown Le Mans. It means weighing and constitutes tech inspection/scrutineering, traditionally always in the centre of the city. Later this afternoon one car of each team will parade through the centre in front of huge crowds, a newish, very popular happening.

Tech inspection is being livestreamed on youtube.

I like how the stripes go back over the rear fenders now.

The Aston sounds very nice with it’s V12; even the Alpines and Toyotas sounds better than the 499P

    Arnage corner!:)

I always go there and Indianapolis curve at night during Le Mans Classic as it is the most intact, unmodified portion of the track and surroundings, a real time machine experience whereas the huge concrete pit building dwarfs vintage racers.

The Astons sound wonderful in videos, wish the 499P's had a V12 with carbs:D.
