308 shifter lever return pin PN 108824

    Working on a 1983 308 GTB project car.
    Upon receiving the car, noticed the shifter handle not returning to center and can even spin the handle.
    Removed the shifter assembly to inspect and found the lever pin retainer is completely missing.
    the snap ring, cover and spring are present.

    PN# 108824 lever return pin shows available to order, however, Eurospares says it’s discontinued.
    Anyone have one they can offer to purchase or pics and measurement of one to see if I can have fabricated at a machine shop?

    Not a high demand item. Find people who part out cars. Ferrparts, GT Car parts, T Rutlands etc.

    Where did it go, is it sitting in the bottom of the shifter casing? Seems an odd item to be missing, if someone took it apart and put it together without that the shifter would not be working as you note.

    Thanks for the suggestion. So far no luck with Ferrparts. I checked everywhere around the interior and it’s nowhere to be found.

    Time to get creative. You might have to buy the one that fits the Mondial and some other models, the part which has a slightly different design with a nub on one end, and grind the nub off. I suspect the hole in the shifter case is the same size in each model, but can't be sure. If it is, and that alternative part is indeed available, it could possibly be modified to fit.

    Or if someone can measure the precise dimensions of the item, it looks like a simple sleeve that could be fabricated for low cost.

    The alternative would be to buy a used shifter assembly off of ebay or elsewhere. You might be able to do that and then resell some of the parts you don't need and recoup some of the cost.

    It looks like a simple closed off cylinder. Does the spring look as though it fits inside? The diameter of the hole will determine the OD with some clearance. Easy enough to fabricate. The thickness of the closed off cylinder”end” might be tricky but trying washers against the spring might give an idea.

    This is why I think the Mondial item with the nub ground off might be the solution. Part number 103317 superceding 522514.

    Makes me look at my own shifter, this little extra nub on the part was probably an add on to the original 308 part, to help the Mondial and TR cars orient the shifter handle a bit more than in the 308, which has a different shift lever. The picture is with the shifter moved fully to the left of centre, where this little spring loaded sleeve with the nub comes out of its burrow. It is interesting that your car is shifting ok without this part in place. I am not certain exactly what its function is, it must be interacting with the spring loading within the transmission, those famous 3 little springs and balls within the transmission pan.

    You are looking for what is in the upper right hand corner of this picture, I believe. No I don’t have an extra! But my shifter is still out. I just bought a very cool 3D scanner and I can make a scan and convert it to a cad file or simply share measurements. You can have one machined with steel rod and a lathe pretty quickly. Or, I could try to print it out of a carbon fiber infused plastic and you could put a washer in between, it might last?!? Maybe outsource a cnc version to be made….. The pin fits into a recess in the shifter fulcrum and keeps it from spinning and within limits vertically as you press down for reverse lockout. It's not a ton of force but I think a solid metal one would be better.

    Note - mine is out of a '75 GT4, so yours might be different. I am sure brian can confirm but it looks as though some shifters didn't have the groove on the fulcrum ball. Does yours look the same as mine or is the face where I see the groove in my pic remain a flat surface on yours? your pic doesn't really show...
