What causes the spoiler warning light on a 456GT bot flash. It stops flashing when the engine is stopped and restarted but starts flashing again when speed exceeds high 70s MPH

Have you tried testing it to see if it works? There are some small plugs in the passenger footwell which can be shorted together to make the spoiler move.

Search the 456/550/575 forum for tips on diagnosis/repair. Usually the motor/gearbox fails, but there is an ECU in the passenger footwell which controls it.

The stepper motor at the rear of the car that controls the spoiler usually malfunctions, causing the ECU to illuminate the warning light. It is a pain in the ass to fix, and doesn't really do anything that affects the handling of the car at USA legal speeds.

It would be interesting to see what the car feels like at 100MPH+ in both spoiler positions.

I just unplug the ECU, so the light doesn't come on anymore. The ECU is located behind the main fusebox as shown in Ian's diagram above.

Looks like Ferrari used a pop-up headlight motor to drive the spoiler. No wonder it always breaks down.
