Surprised your warranty covered a thing after installing a tune..
I don't understand why a Ferrari that has been designed to easily accommodate "engine out" maintenance is so feared ? I own a 348 and can have the drive train out in 6 hrs myself. Once removed everything is easily accessible and all work carried out. Also a perfect opportunity to do all the other "while it's out" jobs like cleaning, inspecting, repairing wiring, changing coolant hoses, etc. I would expect a model requiring this level of scrutiny should be considered not a headache but the "gold standard" for quality maintenance !
Portofino too. Timing cover leak is most likely than head gasket although can be both. Not covered with Power 15.
From what I understand the cam shaft half shells are fitted in the camshaft cover, so you cannot just let off the cam covers without losing the timing. They have to fit external plates to tie the engine position before letting off the covers.
You should be happy your car has this defect repaired and under warranty. All 488s will eventually need to have the original head gaskets replaced. My dealer told me the replacement gaskets have been updated and of all the ones they replaced none have come back. Cars with the defect taken care of are worth more than cars without this being done.
Yes, a little seepage is not of immediate concern, but the leakage and defect has shown it's ugly head. Why wait for more damage?
Of course, because 488 is like Ford F150, people drive for years and never go to the workshop for maintenance, right? So no one knows that half is broken. By the way, why exactly half? Why not 90 or 100%? There are ten thousand of picky owners of 488 with internet in the world, and based on 1 (one!) case from the forum you say that everything is terrible.
There has been multiple reports. How many 488 owners get on here and complain... If the 20k cars produced... How many post?
I think the problem is people don't drive thier cars. If you drive your cars often and run them up to temp etc then u avoid most or these issue in my opinion. When these cars sit that's when you open yourself up to issues.
The head gasket problem is not because of a lack of lubrication from setting idle. The problem is only evident in the turbo charger versions of the engine. Ferrari has replaced the original gasket with an updated gasket and my dealer says they have not had 1 come back after being updated. This is a maintenance item which owners should expect to have done.
