Curious to get the group’s take on this. I’ve seen a few matte black Ferraris recently — some factory, some aftermarket — and I have to admit, they look incredibly menacing. In particular, I’ve noticed setups where glossy aero parts (diffuser, skirts, front) really pop against the matte finish in a great way. I’m toying with the idea of going with high-gloss Nero DS from the factory, then wrapping the car in matte black afterward. The question is: Would you go matte black on a 12C Coupe (or another model)? And if so: Would you keep the aero parts in carbon fiber gloss, gloss black, or go body-colored matte? This isn’t a locked-in plan — more of a creative thought experiment — but the photos I’ve seen lately are making me seriously consider it. Would love to hear your opinions and see any pics if you’ve gone this route. Thanks in advance for voting and sharing ideas. Here is my current spec and a few other photos so you know why I posted... Hopefully you find this helpful. https://news.dupontregistry.com/ferrari/miller-motorcars-delivers-a-brand-new-819hp-12cilindri-finished-in-nero-ds-opaco/ Abso6do not do opaco from the factory. Your idea of gloss then matte clear bra is the correct path
Everyone has their own taste, but since you asked, I am not a big fan of matte finishes. But as technom3 stated, if you want the look, do the clear matte wrap.
Matte finishes don’t belong on any car. Unless it’s a hunting truck and you rhino liner the whole thing for going thru tree branches and scrapes over the natural terrain. someday, you may want to sell your car and matte will simply be valued less if at all…
A matte black 12C with gloss carbon aero would look killer that contrast adds depth and aggression. Keep the diffuser/skirts in glossy carbon to make them pop, or go gloss black for a stealthier vibe. Body-colored matte aero might flatten the look too much. Saw a wrapped 650S that nailed this combo menacing but sleek. If you’re on the fence, test a panel first. Your current spec’s clean, but matte could take it to another level.
Actually that’s what I was thinking. That being the case, I’d probably be better off doing carbon versus non-painted if I think there is a remote possibility I would do that in the future. Good point on the resale. I go back-and-forth on this issue. I had an R8 spider with a factory matte grey on it and it was fantastic. Had a little sheen to it though so it was kind of a tweener. Mercedes matte was always too satin. Audi did a really good job with their matte. That is what I was thinking. Might have to change to carbon. I was right on the fence whether I should do carbon fiber arrow versus non-painted arrow. I might have to change the spec. Well, that’s why I’m not 100% sold. It does look beautiful and menacing in that article linked on the first post. (Photos below) At this point, there’s no way I would get a factory flat paint though. No way to go back once you do that. If I do anything, I would put a satin PPF on it. I’m not that serious but I like to fiddle and tweak my cars a little bit. I have a 992 TTS and I had it lowered with H&R Springs and I put HRE wheels on it just to make it make the stance look better. I feel as if the 12 Cilindri’s stance looks a little high for me as well, but I’ll deal with that later after I see it. Pulled up next to a 488 at a stoplight with the Matte finish, and that’s exactly what it looked like.
Matte, especially that chalk/grey, was a very fashionable look for a very brief period of time. For me, at least, when I see matte finishes I think to myself “wasn’t it weird when everyone liked that look?” It was a novelty but it was never a nice look to my eyes. Especially on a car with nice lines and curves. At its best I think was on angular designs like those Cadillacs that look like they’re trying to be stealth bombers. Opinion only offered because it was solicited. I don’t want to yuck anyone’s yum and your enjoyment of the car shouldn’t consider my preferences. If you like it, then salute!
My mighty FGT is Mat black with a Mat Grey stripe 3/4 the car. A guy local to me copied the exact look on his F8. On both cars it looks wicked. It’s very subjective but I think that good fashion never goes out of style. The right Mat finish on the right car/truck/motorcycle is timeless be it Blue/Black/white/grey/copper etc…. Now, Chrome/Chrome gold finishes on a car??? …. Barfarama! The Cylindri looks good anyway you dress it. You can’t go wrong with that car
Matte cars always look like they're in primer to me. If you must have something similar to that look, get that flat PPF over a normal paint job.
The key is seeing these examples in real life—photos just can’t capture the subtle differences that matter in your specific situation. Once you’ve done that, go with your gut and tune out the noise about what others think is "best." It's like dating someone that other people like more then you, (unless that's your thing.) And if you're still torn? Experiment with both versions (you're using wraps and bolt-ons right?) Over time, one will naturally emerge as your favorite—The config that stirs you more often becomes the answer. And if you truly end up using both equally? Then it never really mattered which one you picked in the first place, both choices would have given you exactly the same enjoyment.
Everyone has individual tastes, so do what you like. To me, matte colors do not look good on an auto, and I see it more as a current fad that will eventually fade, like spinner wheels. For me, growing up, I was never into the latest fads, of course, there are a couple of old pictures of me, that make me think, WTF was I thinking.
Matte finishes look kind of neat, in that it's neat that they're possible to do to a high standard on a car today. Over time, I tend to think matte finishes will age the way the color teal on a car from the 90s has aged...popular at the time, but forever stuck in that time.
Well it does look like it’s personal preference. Either you like it or you don’t. That being said it looks like the best approach would be to get the car in black and then if I want to do a matte finish do it through a PPF after the fact. Then I could always remove it if I wanted to. Seems like the best way to do it. That being said putting carbon fiber on the aero outside would protect me because I do not think non-painted aero would look good on a matte PPF. I doubt I’ll do it now. I’ve seen a lot of photos of black 12c’s and looks great. But I do like to fiddle so who knows.
IMHO, Body work with shiny paint takes great effort. Cover it up with Matte, looks like an 18 year old kid primer car. Anyway that is just my opinion, your car!
Lot of negative Nancys on matte paint in here lol. I would do Nero Daytona to get the metallic flake in the base color and then have it fully PPF'd in Xpel stealth. This will give you a satin (not matte) look that will play well with the curves and lighting. The flake WILL show up when you're next to the car looking at it. It's cheaper than the factory matte paint and looks much better, not to mention reversible.
