Bought a 430 scuderia from a nice private owner. He mentioned someone reached out to him during his ownership who had the original manuals and service book with stamped vin.

I contacted the guy and he claims a broker sold him the papers after the broker sold the car to a Ferrari store. This makes no sense. A more likely scenario, he was given the books after a broker or owner found them post sale and had no use for them.

He had reached out to the previous owner of my scud and said he had some items he may want that belonged to the car. PO I bought it from didn’t respond but forwarded me his email from a year ago with contact information.

I reached out and he asked me for an exorbitant amount of money for the papers… I did not appreciate that seeing as I’m his only buyer, but he claimed he had a dealer who wanted to buy them for $3500 and resell for $5,000. I only needed the service book with my vin, but he claimed he had to sell the whole lot as this other dealer wanted the stamped service book. Why would anyone else want a service book with my VIN on it?

I didn’t buy the car to flip it but I would obviously appreciate any documentation that came with the car. I expressed to him that I felt his numbers and conversation were very opportunistic. I made him an offer that was more than what some similar prices online were, and he called it a low ball and blocked me.

Does anyone have an idea of how or where I can find a blank service book?

It appears to me these “dealers” business model is likely buying and posting up these vin specific books to see if an owner of a car will pay up for them, knowing they’re valuable to only that buyer.

Experiences like this just go to show how decent guys like Ferrari of Houston are, giving the books to rightful owners for free, rather than extorting them.

What a scumbag. To me, unless the owner of the car that the books belong to wants them, the value is minimal. He’s obviously trying to take advantage of that. Not having them won’t change your ownership experience though. Hold firm on your price in case he comes back as the market for your books is limited.

A single key may mean a Leased vehicle as the leased company usually espects to keep one key set.
When it goes to sell the lease company may not find the key is normal to.

For many decade the dealers keep the books or tools or things and know they sell later for thosands

Let him know that you'll tell every subsequent own that he's a **** head and scammer and not to deal with him. He'll never sell them.

same thing happened to me and I did pay a smaller amount. Frankly, I would just keep the $5000 and tell him to **** off.

Report it as stolen from the car... THEN see how the tune changes. Why else would you have books with the VIN on them from YOUR car? ;)

Are there any high quality replicas that can be had or made? You could leave it in the car and not worry about what happens to it and actually thumb through it and use it without worrying about the value of it.

I had this when USPS tried to sell thee toolkit from my car. It limits listing it on ebay and the online retailers. I don't get it personally.. extortion.. but whatever.

It happens far more than most know. Most owners consider books and tool kits to be in the way. They get taken out of the car and stashed in the basement. 2 years after car is sold or traded in they find them and throw them away or from time to time they get sold. I remind people constantly they belong in the car. Typical response is "Who gives a ****". Personally I use it as a yardstick for quality of ownership. If owner is selling and does not know where books or tools are big red flag for care of car.

Ferrari owners. Of course they don't read the ****ing manual and throw it away and then ask on FChat "How do I lock the doors?"

Sometimes you gots to pay. With my 991 I bought a full manual set from fleabay for a few hundred bucks and kept it in the car. The extortion is annoying, if only just for fundamental basis of it all..

also, buyers will say, “keep the books and tools” to get a lower buy price.
and dealers and mechanics sometimes forget they were taken out of the car when detailing or work was performed.
