    Hello All,

I just recently bought my first Ferrari; a 2017 Cali T with 10K miles. I bought the car as CPO from Ferrari in Long Island and it was delivered to me in New Jersey. I will be going to the DMV next week to register. Any guidance for a newbie owner registering a car like this? What $$$ should I use? I recently bought a car off my dad for one of my kids and when I registered the vehicle I told them I only paid $100. Which was true even though the car was probably worth $5K. They did not even question it.

    Any guidance?

Isn’t the price on the title and bill of sale? Where I am (Florida) you have to show evidence of the purchase price. I’d never risk falsifying the price to save a few dollars of sales tax. It’s a felony here.

good point and I am a boy scout. Just found it odd as that NJ does not actually require a bill of sale. Also, and actually more importantly, I assume the CPO fee is excluded from the vehicle cost right?

Did you pay sales tax in NY on the CPO fee?

If not, then it's subject to sales/use tax in your home state, separate issue from the sales tax on the car, but still due.

I'm surprised the State lets you put any value on the car. In Taxachusetts they use the NADA value if you paid less than market (unless its a salvage title).

What happens if you crash the car and the insurance company says well you only valued it at $100 so that's all we'll pay?

Just tell them What you paid for the car and pay the tax and go from there..assuming you did not pay sales tax in the state you bought it in which case you would show them the bill of sale and they should credit any taxes paid to another state..

Congrats on the Cali T. DMV will likely go by the sale price on the title or bill of sale some states check values against market data. If they ask, be honest, but if they don’t, no need to overpay taxes. Just don’t lowball too hard or they might flag it. Enjoy the Ferrari.
